Incomplete wire copper alloy bow brooch with short bilateral spring, coiled into 5 loops on a central, solid copper alloy axial rod, which holds the spring together. The chord seems to be missing but it could only have been attached to one end of the spring as the other end is in the centre, next to the central coil which extends to form part of the bow. The bow is broken and bent at an angle from subsequent damage, so the original curvature cannot be made out. The foot, pin and catchplate are missing. The surface of the brooch is corroded and pitted so that the recorder cannot determi…

Incomplete cast copper alloy sword belt fitting or baldric ring, circular in profile and D-shaped in section, having a slightly flatter inner edge. The outer surface of the ring or hoop is inlaid with red glass triangles, arranged in a pattern pointing inwards from the edge, so that the alternating copper alloy spaces are triangular or diamond-shaped. The glass is the so called 'sealing wax' glass of the Iron Age, called thus because of the opaque deep red colour. It is technically known as enamel when in fact it is chips of glass inlay. The glass has undergone SEM analysis with Mary …

Treasure: 2008 T782. Gold centre-looped pendant amulet resembling similar examples of cosmetic pestles, in copper alloy, from kits or cosmetic sets, often associated with a small mortar, for the preparation of powdered cosmetics. "I have recorded many hundreds of the copper-alloy components since my original Britannia 1985 paper and all the evidence still supports the cosmetic link, but no evidence at all for woad. I would briefly say that I believe the form of the kits imbued them with roles additional to their basic function in preparing powdered cosmetics, especially related to sta…

Pottery body sherd decorated with incised oblique lines within curved chevrons, running obliquely under a border made up of three parallel incised lines. The border runs the circumference of the shoulder of the vessel, which is probably a typical Iron Age jar, S-shaped in profile. The surface has also been burnished slightly. The fabric looks like it is probably made from gabbroic clay, as there are light felspar inclusions and dark augite inclusions. The colour of the clay has been oxidised on the exterior to a light orange colour and the interior is slightly more buff to light bro…

Pottery rim sherd, un-decorated, from a simple open Iron Age jar with an upright neck. The sherd tapers towards the body from the rim, suggesting that the vessel was hand-made and built up of coils, where the thickness would vary from base to rim. The fabric looks like it is probably made from gabbroic clay, as there are medium to fine crushed light felspar inclusions and dark augite inclusions. The colour of the clay has been oxidised throughout from the exterior to interior to a light orange colour. This pot sherd may be associated with another (CORN-5A7104) that was found near…

Fragment of greenstone quern, perhaps dolerite or epidiorite, triangular in plan and semi-circular in profile and in section. Probably a fragment of the lower stone of a rotary quern which acted as a base below the upper stone of similar circumference, linked by a central hole. The two stones were held together by a wooden spindle through the two holes. The upper stone was rotated over the base and grain placed between the stones so that it was ground. The greenstone is typical of that found in the west of Cornwall from known outcrops and contains pale felspars and dark pyroxene in…

Incomplete cast copper alloy one-piece Colchester type bow brooch, missing the spring, the pin and the catch-plate (with only a width of 8mm, a length of 41mm, a thickness of 3mm and a weight of 2.7g). The spring was positioned behind the wings and only the stubs of the spring at the back of the head and the forward-projecting claw to tension the chord are now present. The stubs of the wings are evident either side of the head. The bow projects outwards from the head before turning sharply in an arch and curving inwards towards the foot. Cast copper alloy annular bead, circular in plan, biconical in profile, and oval in section, with a flattened surface around both of the perforations at top and base. There are two linear grooves, running around the circumference of the bead, above and below the central ridge which gives the bead its diameter. The bead has a central pentagonal perforation, 5 mm in diameter, which is uneven and not machine made. Pottery rim sherd with an upright rolled rim and an external groove under rim, helping to define it. The fabric is a uniform light orangey brown colour throughout, with a reduced exterior, and looks to be gabbroic as it has inclusions of white felspar and grey augite, as well as mica. The surface of the pot has been burnished during manufacture. Iron Age in form, as it is well made and high fired. Christie (1978) illustrates a similar example from Carn Euny on page 415, Fig.58, No.29, which is dated from the 3rd to the 1st century BC.

There is a slight spur on the edge of one side of the perforation, suggesting that the glass has been rolled on a central rod, and pulled off while still hot. Irregular beads made of this dark blue glass have been found in Iron Age, Roman and Post-Roman contexts.
