Incomplete cast copper alloy one-piece Colchester type bow brooch, missing the spring, the pin and the catch-plate (with a width of 9 mm, a length of 90 mm, a thickness of 4 mm and a weight of 5.65 g). The spring was positioned behind the wings and only the stubs of the spring at the back of the head and the forward-projecting claw to tension the chord are now present. The stubs of the wings are evident either side of the head. The bow projects outwards from the head before turning sharply in an arch and curving back on itself towards the foot, as it is now bent in half. The bow is re…

Incomplete cast copper alloy La Tene IBc type brooch influenced by earlier Etruscan leech-shaped brooches. The bow is decorated with incised lines inset from the edge, following the leech-shaped body, one on either side of a central straight line. Most of the spring and the pin are missing but the catchplate remains. The surface is pitted in places but retains a dark green patina throughout. Hattatt (2000) illustrates a similar example on page 288, Fig.147, No.1447A, which is dated from the 4th to the 3rd century BC. This is a La Tene 1Bc type (after Hull, M.R. and Hawkes, C. 1987…

Incomplete wire copper alloy bow brooch with short bilateral spring, coiled into 5 loops on a central, solid copper alloy axial rod, which holds the spring together. The chord seems to be missing but it could only have been attached to one end of the spring as the other end is in the centre, next to the central coil which extends to form part of the bow. The bow is broken and bent at an angle from subsequent damage, so the original curvature cannot be made out. The foot, pin and catchplate are missing. The surface of the brooch is corroded and pitted so that the recorder cannot determi…

Cast copper alloy incomplete La Tène III bow brooch with long bilateral spring, coiled into 9 to 10 (two missing) loops on a solid rod or chord. The foot and the catch-plate are missing. The length of the brooch is 28.3mm, width of the spring and chord is 20 mm and the thickness of the bow is 5 mm. The brooch weighs 3.53g. Dr. J.D. Hill comments: "Technically, because of the foot being part of the bow, they should be La Tène III, but these brooches are a distinctly Somerset and Dorset (and further west) type. The dating is not clear. As they are derived from an earlier type, it n…
