Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy unidentified object of uncertain date. The object is triangular in shape and hollow. It does not appear to be broken so determining what it may be a part of is problematic. It measures 31.9 mm long and 15.48 mm wide at the base and is 14.33 mm high. The ends taper slightly to one side, so the base is shorter at this side at 28.6 mm in length. The triangular aperture at this side is correspondingly slightly smaller. The object has a very abraded green patina with a red/brown hue where the surface metal has worn away. It weighs 16.2 grams.

Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead weight or spindle whorl. The object is irregulary shaped and plano-convex, with a circular perforation in the centre, 7.82 mm in diameter. The object measures 22.76 mm long, 18.48 mm wide, 5.76 mm thick and weighs 11.7 grams. It is very worn and appears not to have been decorated. It has a pale cream to white patina.Dating such objects is notoriously difficult when they are recovered from an unstratified context, and it may date from anywhere between the Roman and post-medieval periods.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable moulded lead weight of uncertain date. The weight is sub-circular, with one flat side. It is flat on the reverse and has a stamped impression on the front which reads IIP (or dII if inverted) set within a border comprised of two lines. Outside this border there are traces of an inscription running around the side of the weight but this is now illegible. The weight measures 134.9 grams, the equivalent to 0.3 avoirdupois pounds. It measures 52.95 mm long, 52.68 and 11 grams thick. It has a cream patina.

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy cast strap end (probably). The strap end has a split opening for the strap. There is a circular perforation on each part of the split end for a rivet. The strap end terminates in two globular balls (each approximately 7.5 mm thick), each on a stem which projects from the flat body of the strap end. The strap end measures 27.49 mm long, 20.34 mm wide (at its terminal) and 5.27 mm thick. No published parallel has yet been found for this strap end, and its date is therefore still uncertain. However, a very similar object is recorded on this database as NARC-F0E7E6. The…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The spindle whorl is 32.81 mm in diameter with a central perforation that is 8.32 mm in diameter. Both sides of the whorl are decorated, four regularly spaced circular dots in relief, the other with regular lines that expand at an angle from the central perforation to the edge. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). This exampl…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead cuboid artefact, possibly a weight of some sort. None of the faces are inscribed, suggesting that this was not a die. It is slightly irregular, but clearly deliberately cuboid. Each face measures approximately 10 mm by 10 mm. It weighs 9.2 grams. This object is impossible to date on stylistic grounds and its date is therefore uncertain.

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy arrowhead of uncertain date. Several archaeological finds specialists have now looked at this arrowhead and none feel that it is likely to be of Bronze Age date. It certainly does not fit well into the typologies of any British Bronze Age arrowheads, though nor does it fit well into typologies of later date. It is more akin to Mediterranean arrowheads of the Classical period, and until a parallel is found the date and culture of the arrowhead must remain uncertain. The patina and thickness of the metal is also inconsistent with a Bronze Age date. The arrowh…

Circular domed object made from gold, consisting of a circular back sheet, an incomplete filigree collar, and a domed upper sheet. The back sheet is 13.0mm in diameter and was probably originally flat; it is now very slightly concave, around a flat rim underneath the narrow flange running around the domed upper sheet. There are several small indentations, as if the back sheet has been poked repeatedly by a sharp point. There is one tiny circular hole close to the edge and, directly opposite and close to the edge, a tear perhaps through a second hole. The surviving hole is c. 0.6mm in …

Object type: RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy ring of uncertain date. Such rings may have been used for many different purposes, often presumably for strap attachment on personal and horse trappings. Such rings are undiagnostic when discovered outside a dated archaeological context and so the precise function and date of this example remains obscure. It measures 19.92 mm in diameter, 2.31 mm thick and weighs 1.5 grams. It has a worn green patina.

Object type: RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy ring of uncertain date. It is possibly a finger ring, although this does not seem likely as the interior of the loop is not smoothed and it has a fairly small diameter (interior 12.9 mm, exterior 19.29 mm). It is more likely that the ring is a strap or harness fitting or some similar object. Such rings were in use throughout history, and so dating it outside of a context is very difficult. It is 3.6 mm high, 2.84 mm thick and weighs 3.4 grams. It has a dark green patina yet where it is corroded it is a paler green and parts have a purple hue.

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Four pieces of probable casting waste, all sub-circular except one which is broken and semi-circular. All but the broken one have a central linear casting flash on one side. The form, texture and patina of these pieces are not indicative of a prehistoric date, although other than that this they're dating is currently uncertain. It is also not clear what objects they are associated with the manufacture of. The pieces range in size from approximately 28.89 mm in diameter to 35.9 mm. They range in thickness from 4.56 mm to 3.2 mm.

An igneous stone (granite?) whetstone of uncertain date. The stone is finely finished and shaped with a carved sub-oval 'tang' to slot into a handle. The sides are straight and there is a ridge running down the centre of one face, making the stone pentagonal in shape. The blade is truncated and as its terminal is not so smooth as the edges of the rest of the blade this would seem to be through damage rather than wear through use. The stone is a dark grey to black in colour with fine inclusions, but is an orangey brown in colour where it has been shaped to fit the handle, and to a less…

A fragment of cast copper-alloy, date and function somewhat uncertain. The object has a rounded terminal and is clearly broken at the other end. It is convex on one side, concaved on the other, with a ridge running diagonally and off-centre from the break to the ther curved terminal on this the concaved side. The curvature and ridge suggest it is not the tip of an axehead. It is very possibly the tip of a foot from a cauldron or skillet, although the curvature and relative thinness make this unlikely. Alternatively it may be part of the rim from an object such as a chafing dish, but t…

A cast copper-alloy object, currently of uncertain function and date. The object is cross shaped with four arms, one of which is alomst entirely missing, whilst another is missing its tip. These are set around a lozengiform central perforation. The two complete arms have terminals which are narrowed and circular, suggesting that these may have slotted into something, though what this may have been is currently unclear. A circular lead spindle whorl. The spindle whorl is plano-convex and undecorated. The central perforation for the spindle is approximately 9.8 mm in diamater. It measures 32.06 mm in diameter, 9.5 mm thick and weighs 43.1 grams. It is plain and undecorated. As such objects were used for a wide period of time, from the Roman period through to the post-medieval, the dating for this plain example is uncertain.
