A fragment from a cast gilded copper-alloy cast saucer brooch of early Anglo-Saxon date, dating from circa AD 450 to 550. The remains of the brooch show that the front surface was decorated with a moulded 'running spirals' design. Some of the gilding has abraded away, exposing a black surface. Elsewhere patches of green copper corrosion are visible. On the reverse the remains of the broken hinge for the pin, or possibly the catchplate, are visible. The brooch fragment measures 23.64 mm long, 17.07 mm wide, 1.89 mm thick and weighs 2.2 grams.

A cast copper-alloy Roman bow brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends), Mackreth 2011, 4.l, Plate 46. Dating from the late first century to second century AD. The brooch is a large and bulky example of the type and has tubular wings that are open at the reverse for the sprung pin mechanism, retained inside. The spring appears to have 14 coils. The pin is missing. A rearward projecting lug holds the spring cord in place. The wings have pierced circular plates on the end. There is subtle semi-circular moulding on both sides of the head, above the wings. A decorative double band runs down the centre of the bow of the brooch. The remains of the openwork catchplate are visible on the reverse of the lower part of the bow and, although broken, it was clearly triangular in shape. The brooch measures 72.49 mm long, 30.3 mm wide, 31.57 mm thick at the head and it weighs 36.8 grams. It has a dark green patina.

A large and bulky cast copper-alloy Roman bow brooch of Polden Hill type, dating from the late first to second century AD. The brooch is largely complete apart from its missing pin and the sprung pin mechanism is still held in place within the hollow semi-cylindrical wings. The wings have pierced plates at either end. A lug projects from the rear of the head for attachment of the spring cord. There are moulded semi-circular plates above the wings on either side of the head. The remains of the catchplate are visible on the reverse of the bow at the bottom, although this has been broken. The brooch has a predominantly dark brown patina. It measures 51.22 mm long, 34.94 mm wide, 21.44 mm thick and weighs 36.7 grams.

A Roman cast copper alloy Polden Hill brooch, dating from the late first to second century AD. The brooch has semi-circular wings, open at the back for the sprung pin mechanism (now missing). There is a rearward projecting lug at the top of the head for attachment of the spring cord. The wings have pierced plates at each end for the spring cord. Above the wings the head has a semi-circular moulding on each side. The bow has a moulded collared rib which runs down the bow. At the end of this decorative moulding there is an unusual circular drilled hole, approximately 1.7 mm in diameter. This probably held a setting, now lost. The remains of the broken catchplate are visible on the reverse of the bow. The foot of the brooch is broken and missing. The brooch has a dark green to brown patina and is abraded in places.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman bow brooch, a derivative of the trumpet headed type. The brooch dates from the late first to second century AD. The brooch has a trumpet shaped head which is hollow for the sprung pin mechanism, still intact. The pin, however, has been broken and is missing. The iron spring is of five coils and is held in place by an iron axis bar. Much of the iron from the spring has produced a ferrous corrosion product which has formed on the brooch. Above the trumpet head there is an integrally cast suspension loop, now broken. A ridge runs down the centre of the top of the head to a large round decorative boss. This boss has a circular pellet in the centre surrounded by a circular cell which probably originally contained enamel, although none survives. The circular boss is flat on the reverse. Below the boss the bow is broken and missing. No remnants of the catchplate survive. The brooch has a predominantly brown colour, largely a result of the aforementioned ferrous corrosion.
Length 29.77 mm, width 12.65 mm, thickness 10.16 mm, weight 6.1 grams.

A fragment of a cast copper-alloy Roman bow brooch, probably of developed T-shaped type, dating from the later-first century to early-second century AD. Only the head and a small portion of the upper bow survive. The wings are semi-cylindrical in shape and have pierced plates at each end for the pin bar. The brooch was probably sprung but the pin mechanism is missing. The head is very angular and there is a step running from the top of the head down to the top of the wings where there is a break, probably where a projecting lug or loop has broken off. The head is decorated with a thin central rib. The sides of the wings next to the head are decorated with a moulded semi-circular band with incised decoration. The brooch suffers from the effects of abrasion and corrosion. Where the surface patina survives it is of a dark green colour.

A cast copper-alloy Roman plate brooch of 'umbonate' type, dating from the late first to second century AD. The brooch is lozenge shaped (tear drop shaped) in plan and has an oval knop at the foot and an incomplete loop at the top. There is a knop on each side, approximately at the central point of the brooch. The brooch is rounded on the front, concave (dished) on the reverse. Below the broken loop at the top of the brooch on the reverse there is the remains of a hinged pin mechanism. The pin is missing. At the bottom of the brooch the catchplate remains intact, extending behind the projecting knop on the front.
The front of the brooch is decorated with a moulded design of a central raised pellet surrounded by eleven sub-triangular cells emerging like rays from the central knop. These have waisted, crescent shaped ends. These cells are themselves surrounded by twelve lozenge shaped cells and towards the knopped foot there are two elongated trefoil shaped cells. All of the cells retain traces of a yellow enamel. The outside of the brooch has a border set slightly lower than the centre, allowing the decorative centre-piece to stand proud. This border has faint incised decorative zig-zags running horizontally around it. The surface of the brooch has a predominantly brown patina.
It measures 37.22 mm in length, 26.87 mm in width, 5.43 mm, and weighs 6.6 grams.

A cast copper-alloy Roman bow brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends type, West Midlands), Mackreth 2011, 4.d, pg.73, Plate 47, dating from the late first to second century AD. The brooch is of Polden Hill type and has the characteristic semi-circular wings with circular plates on the end, open at the back for the sprung pin mechanism. The wings are now filled with ferrous corrosion, indicating that the pin mechanism was iron. The brooch has a rearward projecting hook at the top of the head for securing the spring cord and the sides of the head have crescent shaped moulding, above and behind the wings. A decorative rib, with grooves either side, runs down the centre of the head, tapering out as the head narrows into the bow. The remains of the catchplate are visible on the reverse of the bow. The brooch has a dark brown patina.

A copper-alloy twisted wire one-piece brooch of late Iron Age date. The brooch is incomplete, missing its pin and catchplate and it is therefore a little difficult to determine whether the brooch is of La Tène II or La Tène III style and date. Given the fairly acute angle with which the head emerges from the bow it seems more likely to be La Tène III, thus dating from the second half of the first century BC into the first half of the first century AD (circa 50 BC - AD50). The spring has two coils remaining before the break and the broken part of the spring/pin loops under the top of the bow. The brooch measures 36.86 mm long 10.2 mm wide at the head, 3.69 mm thick at the bow and it weighs 2.7 grams. It is heavily abraded and corroded and has a green/brown colour.

A fragment of a Roman Tutulus Brooch, dating from the fourth century AD. It is cast and has a concavo-convex plate and a central cone whose base is defined by inscribed lathe turned circumferential lines, and a central boss with a central rounded knop. When complete the circumference of the plate would probhably have had six equidistant lugs set around its rim. The catchplate remains on the rim of the reverse but the hinged pin mechanism is missing. The type is referred to by Mackreth (2011, page 163-4) as a Dished Cone, Type 5. Suggested date: Late Roman, 300-350.
The remains of the brooch measure 23.41 mm long, 15.37 mm wide, 6.17 mm thick and weighs 2.1 grams. It has a green patina.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends), Mackreth 2011, 4.l.b Plate 49. The brooch has semi-cylindrical wings with oval endplates, pierced for attachment of the pin bar. The pin mechanism is missing so it is unclear whether the brooch was sprung or hinged although a rearward projecting lug which may have secured a spring cord may suggest the former. The ends of the wings have a moulded ring around the perforations and there is also a moulded double collar towards the end of each wing. The head has the moulded semicircular plates on the sides which are a characteristic feature of brooches of this type. The bow has unusual moulded decoration. Abrasion and corrosion obscure some of the detail but part of the decoration consists of concave swirling lines (two crescents which meet in the centre) which terminate in rings. In between the two terminals there is a moulded sub-oval knop. The bottom of the bow is missing along with most of the catchplate, the remains of which can be seen on the reverse of the upper part of the bow. Traces of silvering remain on parts of the brooch. An incomplete copper-alloy Romano-British brooch of Colchester derivative Polden Hill (Mackreth Group 4, flat wing ends), dating from the late first to second century AD. The wings are broken at both ends but they appear to have been semi-cylindrical and open at the back for the sprung pin mechanism (now missing), with a rearward projecting lug at the top of the head for securing the pin cord. The brooch lacks the moulded side plates on the head which are usually a characteristic feature of Polden Hill brooches, making identification of the type slightly tentative, although the semi-cylindrical wings are characteristic of brooches of this type. No decoration remains and the catchplate on the reverse of the lower part of the bow is almost entirely missing. The brooch is heavily abraded. Where the surface metal survives it has a dark green patina. Elsewhere the brooch is a more mottled green in colour. It measures 43.92 mm long, 11.16 mm wide at the head, 12.71 mm thick and weighs 6.1 grams.

A cast copper-alloy Roman bow brooch of Colchester dervative, Polden Hill type (Mackreth 2011, Chapter 3, Part 3, 4. a.-c.), dating from the late first to second century AD. The brooch is damaged, missing the lower part of the bow and the spring mechanism and pin. The semi-cylindrical wings are open at the reverse for the missing pin mechanism which was probably sprung. The ends of the wings are damaged but would have been pierced to hold the spring bar. An incomplete rearward projecting lug at the top of the head would have secured the spring cord. There are moulded plates on the side of the head, a characteristic feature of brooches of this type. There are vertical moulded decorative ridges on each wing. A decorative ridge also runs down the top of the bow. The bottom of the bow, which would have had the catchplate on the reverse, is missing. The brooch measures 24.92 mm long, 21.37 mm wide at the wings, 8.57 mm thick at the head and weighs 4.5 grams. It has a dark grey/green patina.
