Mourning ring. Gold D-sectioned band, slightly oval, measuring externally 20 x 21mm, 4.5mm wide. Engraved on the outside with a skull, two flowers and one half flower between which are leaves. Traces of black enamel survive. Inscribed internally 'G A ob 26 May 98' and a stamped maker's mark EH within a square. At this time black enamel was used on a ring commemorating a married person and white enamel for the unmarried (Om…

Object type: HOARD

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Summary: Bronze Age hoard consisting of 191 objects including wood and cloth. The finds were found with a metal detector in the ploughsoil over an area at least 30ft. across, and the site was subsequently excavated by Andrew Rogerson. The site was ridged for asparagus immediately prior to the first discovery. During excavation, the surface was removed to reveal an almost square pit (300 x 300mm) cut into natural orange clay to a depth of 90mm. The very clearly defined edges of the cut indicate that the pit was not left open for a great length of time. The upper surface was ba…

Palaeolithic flint handaxe. Measuring 210 x 115 x 37mm. This is a very large handaxe, probably one of the largest ever recorded from Norfolk. Although long and wide, the handaxe is relatively slim and has a profile that suggests that it may have been made on an enormous primary flake, or more likely a large, flat nodule of flint. It is finished by large invasive flake removals around the whole perimeter except at the point, where the flake scars are relatively small. Heavily patinated, weathered cortex remains to one face where the flake scars failed to overlap, a couple of …

17th Century gold posy ring. Band consisting externally of ten circular bosses with corded borders. Between each boss on both sides of the band are smaller round knops. The flat internal surface is inscribed 'God gives in crease to Loue and peace'. The 's' of crease is very elongated and almost in the form of an f missing the cross bar. The tail of the letter 'p' extends backwards to underline the last two letters of 'and'. See Oman (1974, plate 58 c) for a very similar example with a different inscription. The style of the lettering is consistent for the 17th century. The British Mus…
