Treasure report by Adrian Marsden: A hoard of cu alloy objects found in close association with one another and very close to a radiate imitation manufacturer's hoard found in November 2004 (see file). These comprise two RB bracelets and 10 sestertii of the second century. The coins, where condition at deposition can be ascertained, were all heavily worn, suggesting a mid-third century date. This suggests that both bracelets and coins were intended for melting down to produce radiate imitations, a theory made more likely by the fact that one sestertius appears to have had pieces cut…

Medieval silver open-framed brooch. Sub-circular frame, flat on the reverse, cast in low relief on the front in the form of two addorsed birds, with their tails intertwined in a knot terminating in a rounded 'brambled' knop on the outer edge of the frame, their curved bodies forming the sides of the brooch, their heads turned back so their beaks meet above the piercing for the pin attachment. On the outer edge of the frame a small rounded knop with radiating grooves may be intended as a shell or pearl held between the bird's beaks and mirroring the knop at their tails. Deta…

A modified (pierced and gilded) post-medieval silver groat of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), mint: Tower (London), initial mark: lis (North 1986) dating to 1558-60. Ref: North 1991. The coin has been gilded and been pierced near the edge at 6 o'clock on the obverse, and it is probable that the modified coin was used as a pendant. The sharp condition of the coin suggests that this adaptation does not date very long after the striking of the coin, probably in the 1560s. Weight 2.1g.

A post medieval silver threepence of Charles II dating to c.1664-70. This has been gilded and pierced at the 12 o'clock position on the obverse. Clearly the intention was that the coin might serve as a pendant. The display of the king's head in this way may well also have had an ideological element. This adaptation of the coin would, in all probability, have been carried out shortly after the coin's issue. Coin issued c.1664-70, adaptation in the late 1660s or 1670s. 18mm diameter, weight 1.38g.

A sixpence of Elizabeth I, Tower mint, 1578 with a plain cross initial mark (North 1997), gilded on both sides and neatly pierced near the edge at 12 o'clock (on the obverse). This adaptation was clearly carried out to transform the item into a piece of jewellery, probably a pendant, and, as a coin of over three hundred years modified in this way, it now falls under the terms of the Treasure Act of 1996. 1578, modified at a later date, probably in the late 16th or early 17th century. Diameter 26mm, weight 2.67g.

Incomplete medieval silver pilgrim badge, openwork, St Christopher leans on a staff which miraculously bore flowers, leaves and dates and half turns his head to see the Christ Child seated on his shoulder. Medieval silver annular brooch. The frame is flat on the reverse and convex on the upper face, in the form of a two snakes, the smaller snake wrapped around one half of the larger, the separate heads and a fragment of wire forming the tip of a tail soldered onto the frame so there is a head at either end of the pin when the brooch is closed. The sheet pin has a double rib before the loop. The half of the frame formed by the body of the larger snake is decorated with a zigzag triple rib with crosshatching in the resulting triangular fields to either side. Description: Rectangular Carolingian-style silver mount, partly gilded and inlaid with niello, and decorated with Carolingian-style plant ornament. The front of the mount, which has high, curved sides, is decorated in relief, the higher-relief sections of the design inlaid with niello and the lower-relief sections gilded. The selective gilding appears to be deliberate, rather than the result of wear on the higher relief elements of the design. The design is centred around an X-shaped cross in high relief, with the arms curving inwards to form two back-to-back C shapes (when the mount …

Description: A fragment of a Middle or Late Anglo-Saxon silver brooch. Originally cross-shaped, the fragment consists of the splayed or pelta-shaped terminal of one arm, with just over one coil of an incomplete integral spring projecting from the edge and coiling under the plate. The plate is broken along the straight edge of a further panel forming the arm of the cross or perhaps the centre of the brooch. The terminal probably originally joined the terminals of the neighbouring arms to form apertures in the internal angles of the cross, across which the plate is now broken. The termi…

24 short cross pennies found dispersed over a small area. Five medieval coins were found in the area. Four are short cross pennies, all of the London mint whilst the fifth coin is a cut short cross halfpenny, also of London. All the pennies are in crisp, barely-circulated condition; apparent wear on a couple of coins being due to areas of flat striking. Three of the pennies are of the moneyer Abel, the other two coins of Ricard. All the pennies are class 5 or 6 issues of John whilst the cut halfpenny is a class 3 or 4 issue of Richard I or John. The similarities of condition, date of striking not to mention the fact that all coins are of Lond…

This group comprises fifteen Iron Age coins and twenty-three Roman coins. All of the Iron Age coins belong to the East Anglian regional series which is usually associated with the Iceni, a people thought to have inhabited modern Norfolk and parts of Suffolk and Cambridgeshire in the century or so before the Roman conquest. The types represented here were struck between about 20 BC and AD 50. There are thirteen Roman Republican issues, the earliest struck by the magistrate P Maenius in 132 BC. The remaining ten coins are Roman Imperial issues, ranging from those of the first emperor, Au

Five silver denarii and one silver radiate, found in a close area and running in a straight line as if scattered by the plough. One, a coin of Vespasian, is heavily worn whilst the others, coins of Septimius Severus and his family, were relatively crisp.
