Medieval copper alloy rowel from spur with 24 radiating arms, each of which is rectangular-sectioned with bevelled edges, expanding slightly to pointed terminals. The arms are conjoined for about half thier length with a central, sub-oval hole, possibly of irregular shape as a result of wear. Traces of tinning survive on both faces. Maximum diameter 73.5mm. Thickness 4mm. Similar, multi-pointed, large rowels became popular from the later 14th century (Clark, 1995, The Medieval Horse and It's Equipment, 29 and 148, fig.106, no.361 and 362), and other similar examples are reco…

Middle or Late Saxon incomplete copper alloy prick spur. Almost flat-sectioned smoothly curving bar with slightly convex upper face decorated to one side of the short, conical integral goad with two groups of four transverse grooves and broken across a third group of grooves. Immediately to the other side of the goad two rivets secure two now rectangular fragments of sheet of which no original edge seems to survive, one on the front and one on the reverse, before a blunt terminal. This is probably a repair as similar spurs have symmetrical arms, although the terminal of the arm does n…

Copper alloy prick spur. Central flat, hexagonal boss from the centre of which a short, rectangular-sectioned and pointed integral spike projects. One sub-triangular sectioned arm is complete, the flat surface inwards, angled from the central boss but straight rather than curved to form a once side of a U-shape. There is a very narrow transverse rib before the expanded, faceted terminal which is concave sided and tapers in thickness to the rounded end with two rivet holes one of which retains a copper alloy rivet. The other arm is incomplete and may have been repaired, with a rivet ho…

Fragment of oval sectioned tinned spur terminating in two conjoined attachment loops. Buckle plate attached to one loop by hooked terminal, lobed on either side of hook, expands towards slot for pin. Iron staining indicates the missing pin and possibly the buckle frame were iron, traces of tinning, square stamp on reverse. Buckle plate 25 x 13mm, spur at least 18 x 15mm. Similar to a 17th century example from Somerset (Read, 2001, 65, fig.41 no.499).
