Post-medieval gilded silver dress fastener. Openwork plate consisting of four circular apertures around a central heart with scrolls to either side, a narrow transverse rib forming a straight edge above the heart and two pierced circular attachment lugs projecting from the lower edge below the heart. In the centre of the upper straight side is a broken, ungilded scar where a missing element, probably a pierced lug forming the eye, has broken off. Dress fastener consisting of a single piece of circular sectioned wire formed into a spiral 'figure of eight' which would have been sewn onto a garment, ending in a hook with a rounded end. Part of composite quadrangular gilded silver dress fitting, made in two parts. A central cast element, with a large central perforation and a smaller perforation in one corner for attachment to clothing, is decorated with separate elaborately cast filigree design of symmetrical curling foliage fronds and pellets (some now missing) which fill the field around the large perforation. A concave-sided lozenge-shaped backplate of silver sheet folded over at edges. Gilded front and back. 21 x 22mm. Of similar feel and date to elaborate dress fittings in Gaimster et al. (2002). 16th century.

Part of a composite silver dress fitting, elaborate cast trefoil with pair of curling fronds and large central perforation into which is inserted a rolled sheet collar with longitudinal seam, projects 5mm from reverse. Of similar feel and date to elaborate dress fittings in Gaimster et al. (2002). 13 x 13mm. A good comparison, though reported as a belt mount, is found in Treasure Annual Report 2003 (2003T154) no. 284 from Hedon, Yorks, now recorded on the PAS database as YORYM-B33A28. 16th or 17th century.

Gilded silver fragment probably of a dress fastener. Flat-sectioned plate with two small projecting pierced lugs for attachment with a small pellet between, decorated in low relief with a fleur-de-lis within a triangular border with a pellet at the end of a scroll to either side below the pierced lugs. Post-medieval gilded silver hook from a composite hook-and-eye set. Circular plate with a border of twisted wire, a central circle of plain wire with four evenly spaced ovals of plain wire linking the central circle and edge. A hook formed from a piece of wire bent double with the ends bent into loops to forms eyes is soldered to the reverse. Diameter of plate 10mm. Length 11mm. Read (2008, 159, no.598 and 599) Class B, Type 2. See ESS-FC3336 for a similar example. 16th century.

Cast in low relief in the form of a stylised cherub's face with trefoil sprigs of probable foliage above and below, the larger upper sprigs framing the base of the circular eye, the lower smaller sprigs framing a an attachment loop to either side of the cherub. Medieval or post-medieval silver gilt mount or eyelet. Circular, with the impression of the cuttlefish mould, and two integral rivets on the reverse. The front face has a raised transverse panel with convex edges leaving a crescentric flange to either side of the mount. Two thirds of the raised panel are decorated with a narrow central concave moulding flanked by a wider moulding to either side, before an off-centre rectangular hole through a concave face. A circular silver sheet with twisted silver wire soldered to the reverse bent in the same plane as the disc to form an eye, the ends bent outwards into circles to form two attachment loops. There is a central hollow dome with eight apertures in the sides on the front of the disc topped with a pellet surrounded by a circle of twisted silver wire. Post-medieval silver dress fastener eye plate cast in the form of a fan of feathers with an opposed angled lines with curled ends either side of an arrow at the base of the fan. The feathers are alternately plain and cast with a central rib and angled lines. The plate is pierced twice to form attachment holes, with the third attachment loop projecting from the top of the fan and an oval eye projecting from the base. There are two integrally cast circular loops, one to either side of the chin and a larger loop above the head. The reverse is flat and there is no trace of gilding. The plate is in the form of an elaborate trefoil, the side foils at right-angles to the central foil, each with a median rib and trefoil terminal, with one straight edge with a very narrow flange.
