Late Bronze Age gold pendant: one end of a slightly bent round-sectioned shank has been hammered into a D-sectioned loop, while the other expands into a conical terminal on which another object may have swivelled. Formerly described as probably Roman, it has been reassigned, by Caroline Barton and Ben Roberts of the British Museum, to the Late Bronze Age on the basis of its similarity to a copper alloy example in the Boughton Malherbe (Kent) hoard (PAS KENT-15A293). Length 34mm. Width of loop 5.5mm. Diameter of shank 2 - 1.5mm. Diameter of terminal 3mm. Weight 1.89g. 9th century BC.

Description: Early Anglo-Saxon gold and garnet pendant, oval and slightly narrower at the apex than at the base. The sheet back-plate is rolled forward at the upper end to make a suspension loop with four longitudinal ribs. The setting comprises a dark red cabochon stone, presumably a garnet, with an off-centre angled polished face, set within a plain collar formed from a strip of gold sheet, the join clearly visible. A tremissis or pseudo-tremissis of the 7th century, which has been pierced and gilded for use as a pendant. The tremissis is a coin type widely issued by the Merovingian Franks in this period, but also produced by the Anglo-Saxons and Frisians. Such coins were produced in fairly good gold at the beginning of the century, but with the gold contained declining as the century progressed, with the gold increasingly replaced by silver. Gold pendant. Sub-triangular, hollow, originally rectangular sectioned but now concave on both faces. The front and back plate and double ribbed suspension loop are formed from the same piece of metal sheet folded over, with a separate double ribbed repoussé sheet forming the sides, the ends of which join under the loop. A gold solidus of the emperor Theodosius I struck at Milan between 378 and 387 (Roman Imperial Coinage vol. IX, no. 5f or 8b). The coin has been fitted with a ribbed suspension loop, also of gold, at the 12 o'clock position on the obverse (6 o'clock on the reverse) in order for it to serve as a pendant. Description: Early Anglo-Saxon gold disc pendant made from a relatively thick back-plate onto which are soldered all the other components. In the centre is a collar formed from a vertical strip of sheet gold, retaining a shiny translucent orange/brown cabochon containing air bubbles, identified by Raman spectroscopy (see below) as glass.
