Description: Medieval gold iconographic finger ring. The flat-sectioned hoop, now squashed, has zigzag edges and deep transverse grooves giving the impression of two flat bands twisted around each other, which meet the elongated hexagonal bezel without forming shoulders.
The bezel is engraved within a single line border around a nimbed saint wearing a v-necked, belted robe with elbow length sleeves, one hand raised in blessing, the other holding a book or box on which sits the Lamb of God looking over its shoulder at a cross emerging from its back. No seals hang from the book. The sai…

Post-medieval gold mourning ring. D-sectioned band decorated externally with a shallow rib at either edge, between which four oval cells alternate with five quatrefoil cells (resulting in two quatrefoils next to each other). The oval cells contain a raised quatrefoil and the quatrefoil cells a raised pellet, originally reserved on a field of white enamel only traces of which now survive. Each cell is connected to the next by a median rib with two pellets to either side which were also probably reserved on an enamelled field, possible tiny black traces of which survive.

A gold posy ring, D-shaped in section. Inscribed internally 'Loue i,s' the bond of peace' with a stamped, worn makers mark consisting of HB (ligatured) stamped in relief within a square. Tiny traces of possible niello survive in some of the letters. The marks on either side of the s may be unintentional as, although clear, they are slightly irregular. The lettering is similar to that on an example from Firle, East Sussex (Treasure Annual Report 2004, 296, fig. 315), dated 1696. External diameter 20mm, internal diameter 16.5mm. Width of band 4mm Weight 5.24g.

Mourning ring. Gold D-sectioned band, slightly oval, measuring externally 20 x 21mm, 4.5mm wide. Engraved on the outside with a skull, two flowers and one half flower between which are leaves. Traces of black enamel survive. Inscribed internally 'G A ob 26 May 98' and a stamped maker's mark EH within a square. Rings of this type were produced from about 1650 to 1740, strongly suggesting GA died in 1698. After c. 1740 the inscription was usually on the outside of the ring. At this time black enamel was used on a ring commemorating a married person and white enamel for the unmarried (Om…

17th Century gold posy ring. Band consisting externally of ten circular bosses with corded borders. Between each boss on both sides of the band are smaller round knops. The flat internal surface is inscribed 'God gives in crease to Loue and peace'. The 's' of crease is very elongated and almost in the form of an f missing the cross bar. The tail of the letter 'p' extends backwards to underline the last two letters of 'and'. See Oman (1974, plate 58 c) for a very similar example with a different inscription. The style of the lettering is consistent for the 17th century. The British Mus…

Gold posy ring. The hoop has a D-shaped cross-section, and is inscribed on the flat internal face A vertuous wife preserveth life. The two 'v's are written as 'u's and the letters 'f' and 's' are elongated. There is a possible maker's mark in the form of a very worn stamped 'H' between the beginning and end of the inscription. External diameter 21mm, internal diameter 17.5mm, width of band 4.5mm. Weighing 3.8g.

Description: Undated gold finger ring. Sheet band with median repoussé rib. There are at least two transverse creases which may indicate a join but the ring is slightly distorted, making this uncertain.
Dimensions: External diameter 20mm. Width of band 7.5mm. Weight 2.29g.
Discussion: Images of the ring have been seen by British Museum curators including Gillian Varndell, Neil Wilkin, Richard Hobbs and Barry Ager, and they have concluded that it cannot securely be dated to any particular period. It must therefore remain undated, and so does not fall under the provisions of …

Very similar to a 17th - 18th century finger ring in the collections of the British Museum (Museum Number 1961,1202.410), with the same inscription, the words of the inscription separated by stars. English inscriptions in roman capitals became more common from the mid 16th century and many examples are known.
