Neolithic flint axe, found around 1952 - 56, of elongated, narrow-butted form, and of lenticular section with straight lateral edges tapering immediately from the cutting edge, all of the larger knapping scars are completely ground and polished out over the whole surface, with particularly fine polishing around the gently curved cutting edge. Polished Axe, dimensions: 169 x 61 x 34mm. Highly ground and polished all over, with only a few faint flake scars visible at the lateral edges and rounded butt: the sides are ground round rather than flat. The curved cutting edge is sharp with only one ancient chip, while a recent small chip reveals pale grey flint. The axe is patinated light brown with some buff areas. Found in the 1960's and subsequently used as a paperweight. Neolithic (4,000 to 2,350BC)

Neolithic polished flint axehead. Lenticular in section, polished overall but with a few flake scars still visible. Cutting edge curved and sharp, sides tapering towards narrow, straight butt. There is relatively fresh damage in the form of a large natural flake at the cutting edge on one face, and a small flake at the butt end revealing pale yellow-brown flint. The surface of the flint is patinated pale grey with few iron stains. Length 203mm, width 76mm, thickness 55mm. Weight 968g. Similar to NHER 56013 and also PAS (NMS-4C43C4). 3000-2351 BC.

Polished axe in dark grey mottled glossy flint with negligible patination. Polished extensively on one face from the broad blade up the central area to the square butt and with one lateral edge rounded slightly along its whole length, the other only toward the butt. The opposed face is only polished at the extreme edge of the cutting edge and is otherwise neatly finished by shallow re-touch flaking. The elegant shape suggests that this is a flint copy of an Early Bronze Age flat axe, and the shallow invasive flaking is also typical of this transitional period. Almost certainly Late Ne…

Probably Neolithic flint pick. Dimensions 416 x 66 x 49mm. Brown staining over dark grey / black flint. Rhombic section with sharp ridge on one face, largely formed by a natural cleavage plane. Other face flaked over all and with a more rounded ridge. Colour suggests a probable peaty origin, and there is a trace of concretion on one face. At one end an impact has removed a longitudinal flake which has exposed the underlying flint, but this break does not appear to be recent. Otherwise the artefact is undamaged, but is not sharp. The flint is grainy, giving a dull fracture, bu…

Neolithic to Early Bronze Age fabricator made from a found hard hammer struck white and light grey patinated tertiary piece of debitage, this was reworked with steep retouch mostly to the dorsal face at a later date. These flake removals show the original unpatinated dark grey flint. Fabricators are thought to be part of a fire lighting kit; the flint being struck with a piece of Marcasite to produce sparks. 78 x 29 x 14 mm.
