Incomplete copper alloy buckle frame of extraordinary form, corroded and broken, trapezoidal, with the outside edge consisting of a huge animal head with a longitudinal oval aperture formed by the open mouth, one bent obliquely angled oval-sectioned side with engraved transverse grooves survives, the other side and the straight narrowed bar are missing. There is a rounded sub-triangular perforation in the base of the animal-head near the inner edge forming a pin-bar, pin missing. Late Medieval or post-medieval copper alloy buckle, in two pieces, half of one loop missing. Double-oval frame, flat on the reverse, with deep, slightly angled transverse grooves on the front face. Narrowed bar with very slight traces of iron corrosion from the (missing) pin. Measuring 40 x 33mm. For a similar example with less well defined grooves see Egan and Pritchard (2002, 83, pl .50, no.342), from an early 15th century context.

Late medieval or early post-medieval copper alloy locking arm buckle. Rectangular frame with rectangular-sectioned sides drilled for separate spindle and (broken) locking arm. Cast pin with transverse pierced oval-sectioned lug to attach to bar. The outside edge of the larger loop has a transverse flange, the upper edges of the frame concave with a notch at either end. Measuring 29 x 17mm (excluding arm). Width 32 including arm. See similar examples in Whitehead (2003, 89, no.552 - 4). This type of buckle is now thought to date from c. 1500 AD.

Medieval gilded copper alloy buckle plate. Rectangular, recessed for the (missing) frame, slot for (missing) pin, broken at the fold, with two dome headed rivets at the attachment end. On the front of the plate is a lion passant reguardant to sinister in low relief on a field of closely spaced punched dots. Medieval copper alloy buckle. A trapezoidal frame with a curved outside edge with a shallow central notch, and an integral plate which tapers in line with the sides of the frame. There is one integral rivet in the plate, and a hole for the (missing) pin filled with corroded iron. There are traces of gilding on the plate and the frame. Frame 15 x 13mm. Length of frame and plate 30mm. Cf. Whitehead (2003, 33, no.187). c. 1250 - 1400.

Medieval copper alloy buckle. Oval frame, off-set narrowed bar, flat-sectioned outside edge decorated with two pairs of opposed spirals or scrolls. Rectangular plate folded widthways, recessed for the frame, slot for the sheet pin, the back-plate smaller than the front-plate with two rivets at the attachment edge. The plate is decorated with a lion passant guardant in low relief on a stippled ground. The surface is very corroded but gilding survives on the frame and plate. Late 12th - 13th century. Non-symmetrical double oval buckle, central bar projects slightly beyond frame, narrowed for sheet metal pin with raised transverse bar, bar for buckle plate missing, corroded surface with specs of gilding. The central bar is decorated with closely spaced square cells around and between which traces of blue enamel survive. The outside edge has scrolling foliate decoration surrounded by traces of blue enamel. Almost identical to an early 13th century Limoges example (Boehm and Taburet-Delahaye 1996, 287, no. 91). Medieval copper alloy buckle. Oval frame, with only the terminals of the off-set, narrowed bar surviving. The outside edge is formed from three lobes each decorated with two angled transverse ribs forming a chevron. Externally the lobes are slight, internally the edge is scalloped with four concave foils. Measuring 20 x 34mm. Broadly similar in style to double-looped frames in Egan and Pritchard (2002, 84, fig.51, no.345 and an example illustrated from the Museum of London collection), although this is certainly a single-looped example. Probably 14th - 15th century.
