The sheet back-plate is rolled forward at the upper end to make a suspension loop with four longitudinal ribs. The setting comprises a dark red cabochon stone, presumably a garnet, with an off-centre angled polished face, set within a plain collar formed from a strip of gold sheet, the join clearly visible. This is surrounded by an outer border of two plain narrow ribs either side of a beaded wire rib.

A tremissis or pseudo-tremissis of the 7th century, which has been pierced and gilded for use as a pendant. The tremissis is a coin type widely issued by the Merovingian Franks in this period, but also produced by the Anglo-Saxons and Frisians. Such coins were produced in fairly good gold at the beginning of the century, but with the gold contained declining as the century progressed, with the gold increasingly replaced by silver. The design on this example is relatively crude, and could represent either a Merovingian coin or an imitation produced elsewhere. Its gold content is c. 41-4…

Incomplete Early Saxon copper alloy pendant. Originally bell-shaped in outline, with a transversely pierced ribbed suspension lug at the apex and a prominant, D-shaped median rib decending from the base of the suspension lug and further deffined by a groove to either side. One side of the plate is missing, to the other is a sub-triangular / semicircular aperture, the resulting 'arm' becoming wider as it re-curves from the side of the suspension loop towards the rib, with closley spaced stamped annulets or crescents along the outer edge and a shallow groove around the inner edge. Irreg…

Gold pendant. Sub-triangular, hollow, originally rectangular sectioned but now concave on both faces. The front and back plate and double ribbed suspension loop are formed from the same piece of metal sheet folded over, with a separate double ribbed repoussé sheet forming the sides, the ends of which join under the loop. Filigree decoration in the form of six closely spaced 'S' shaped scrolls not arranged symmetrically, and a length of wire following the edge of the pendant with inward curled ends near the top, is fused to the surface. Similar S-shaped filigree scrolls can be seen on…

Copper alloy, probably Late Saxon object. A pendant, harness pendant or possibly a finial or terminal, in the form of an equal-armed cross with expanded ends, rectangular-sectioned and wedge-shaped in profile. Beyond the end of the thickest arm there is a short, narrowed rectangular-sectioned continuation before a break, perhaps the base of a suspension loop, although there is no sign of the section changing to accommodate a transverse loop.
Decorated alike on both faces with a central dot surounded by two rings and a border following the edge of the cross partially filled with dec…

One arm is pierced near the edge for an S-shaped wire link attached to a register chain of eleven wire links. Pendant 21 x 21.5mm. Total length of chain including S link 171mm. Single link 17 x 9mm.

A pendant made from an imitation of a gold solidus of Maurice Tiberius (582-602), a suspension loop with three longitudinal ribs having been soldered to the edge of the coin immediately above the emperor's head. The coin description is as follows:
Obverse: [...]AVRC TIb P P AVG, helmeted, cuirassed bust facing, shield on left shoulder, spear over right
Reverse: VICTORIA AVGGV, long cross on steps above globe, M-A/V_RI in fields
Mintmark CONOB in exegue
The piece is of uncertain origin but is almost certainly a garbled Western copy of originals struck in Constantinople. Obv…

Description: Sheet and filigree wire disc pendant made from pale gold. Circular sheet with a border of applied beaded wire around the edge, now broken in several places and with a short length missing. There is a large central circular setting, now empty, made from an upright strip of gold which has been very neatly soldered to the circular backplate. From this extend four small, evenly spaced U-shaped pieces of beaded wire, alternating with four large U-shaped pieces of beaded wire which extend from the outer edge of the pendant to the edge of the central setting, thus creating a cru…

Description: Early Anglo-Saxon gold disc pendant made from a relatively thick back-plate onto which are soldered all the other components. In the centre is a collar formed from a vertical strip of sheet gold, retaining a shiny translucent orange/brown cabochon containing air bubbles, identified by Raman spectroscopy (see below) as glass. The collar is now cracked and has a lumpy appearance, possibly some gold solder acting as a repair.
Arranged around the setting are ten beaded-wire heart shapes, either touching each other or nearly so; the points touch the collar and the inward-sp…
