Object type: WIRE
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A piece of gold wire made from four strands twisted. The wire was made from 4 smaller wires (diameter c. 2.4 mm) twisted together in a clockwise spiral giving an overall diameter for the twisted wire of 5 mm. The wire piece weighs 7.24g and is 20mm long (unstraightened). The fragment appears to have been cut from a larger piece of wire at one end, although the other end appears to be a break. Analysis shows these wires are made of over 80% gold.

Lead alloy whistle tapering from a broad mouthpiece to a D-shaped sound-hole beyond which it is of consistent diameter as far as the distal end. This is now open but would have been blocked by a stopper of some sort. Decoration around the mouthpiece consists of a band of fine tendril ornament. This is separated from a field of fine pellets by a low rib. The pellets extend to the distal edge of the sound hole. A casting seam extends the full length along both sides. Length 26mm. Mouthpiece 9.5 x 6mm externally. Other end 4.5 x 4mm. Perhaps 17th - 18th century.

Post-medieval silver possible whistle, rattle or handle. Sheet-metal tube open at one end, now broken and distorted, inserted into a separate rounded terminal with a triple moulded collar and terminating in a loop across which it is now broken. There is engraved decoration before the terminal in the form of zigzag lines with multiple closely spaced vertical lines between and crosshatched lozenges between each 'peak'. A separate circular silver plate with an off-centre hole and a scar from possible solder may originally have been attached to the open end. Three links of a copper alloy …
