Fragment of a composite silver disc brooch of rosette shape, with inlaid garnets and silver filigree ornament; it dates to the early part of the early-medieval period and is perhaps of Frankish manufacture. Six of twelve trapezoidal cells around the edge are extant, each with a convex outer edge and set with a cloisonné garnet on pointillé gold foil. These radiate from a circle containing two elliptical cells set with cloisonné garnets and a central panel with silver wire spirals on a silver backplate. Where the radiating cells have been broken, reddish brown material can be s…

A medieval gilded silver annular brooch. The openwork frame is flat sectioned, consisting of an internal ring with sixteen conjoined scallop-shell or fan-shaped projections (eleven of which survive) around the outer edge with a small circular hole between each one. One of these holes is expanded and the internal ring narrowed to hold the (missing) pin. A heavily clipped denier of Conrad, bishop of Utrecht (1076-99). There are four piercings near the edge of the coin, arranged roughly as the spots on the face of a die. One of these is now empty, the other three still contain small silver rivets. Two of these rivets secure a catchplate formed of a silver strip; a pin attachment would doubtless have been secured by the other two rivets, one now missing. Thus, this coin has been adapted as a small disc brooch. The exterior face is gilded and depicts a façade within a beaded border. The interior face is not gilded and figures a male hea…

The object is a silver grosso issued by the Italian city of Bergamo (ref: CNI IV, 45/138). The coin has the image and name of the Emperor Frederick II, king of Sicily, and dates to the mid decades of the 13th century - c. 1250s-60s. The coin would have been produced to a good standard of metal, certainly over 90% fine silver. Its current weight is 1.49g, which is probably about a gram less than its original weight. Bergamese grossi would not have been current in 13th century England and I know of no other example found here. It has in any case been substantially altered and it coul…

Description: Fragment of a silver gilt Anglo Saxon disc brooch. No original edge survives. About half of one, a quarter of another and a fragment of the border of a third gilded lentoid field with beaded borders around a foliate design flank a central panel containing silver foliate decoration emerging from a field containing traces of niello. The brooch is broken across a rivet hole at the junction between two of the lentoid fields. Description: Silver knob, probably from a radiate-headed brooch, with hollow underside and front decorated with a mask consisting of two pairs of eyes in counter relief, and ribbed eyebrows. There is a protruding ledge at the back on the flat end of the object and its underside is hollow. It is difficult to see how this could have been attached to the headplate, in the absence of a rivet hole in the flat end. Dimensions: Length 14.5mm. Width 9.5mm. Thickness 6mm. Weight 1.99g. Silver annular brooch. The circular frame is in the form of two snakes which overlap at their necks, the heads pointing away from the frame. Each elongated head has a pointed muzzle, small projecting ears, and a line forming the closed mouth. One pellet eye survives on each head. One half of the frame is flat sectioned with a pair of median engraved lines along the back, and pairs on tiny pecked notches to either side, possibly representing scales. It narrows towards the rear, then becomes circular sectioned and wrapped in silver wire, leaving a gap for the pin, for the other half. Th…
