Late Saxon fragment of copper alloy bird-shaped brooch, broken openwork with remains of S-shaped bird in Ringerike/Urnes-style, remains of pierced lug on reverse. Cf. Pedersen (1999) figs.1-3. Second half of the 11th century. Other examples of this type of bird brooch on the PAS database include NLM5638, SUSS-44F203, SF-7B3CA5, SF-BCC403, BERK-5DED86, NMS-E7F720, KENT-9F6987, BERK-CEBC67 and SF-AD5FA7.

Polished axe in dark grey mottled glossy flint with negligible patination. Polished extensively on one face from the broad blade up the central area to the square butt and with one lateral edge rounded slightly along its whole length, the other only toward the butt. The opposed face is only polished at the extreme edge of the cutting edge and is otherwise neatly finished by shallow re-touch flaking. This group of three later Iron Age copper alloy objects recovered from near King's Lynn, Norfolk comprises two enamelled flat-ring terrets and a miscellaneous flat ring terret. The terrets are of the same type, however, one is in relatively good condition, being nearly complete and the other is in three pieces with a part missing. The complete terret has a rectangular sectioned attachment bar that is flanked on either end with moulded collars each decorated with a median groove. Non-symmetrical double oval buckle, central bar projects slightly beyond frame, narrowed for sheet metal pin with raised transverse bar, bar for buckle plate missing, corroded surface with specs of gilding. The central bar is decorated with closely spaced square cells around and between which traces of blue enamel survive. The outside edge has scrolling foliate decoration surrounded by traces of blue enamel. Almost identical to an early 13th century Limoges example (Boehm and Taburet-Delahaye 1996, 287, no. 91). Gold pyramid mount from sword, square base with flattened corners caused by triangular settings at the base of each corner with beaded wire on two sides, two of which contain garnets. Square setting for (missing) stone at apex. Hollow with two semicircular holes ( 7 x 3.5mm and 7.5 x 3.5mm) in base divided by a bar 2.5mm wide and c. 1.5mm thick. Constructed from two pieces of metal, one for the base and another for the sides. The join between the two edges of the sides can be seen on one face. Base 9.5 x 10mm, height 13mm, weight 5.08g. Cruciform brooch of Åberg / Leeds Group IVa. Headplate with undecorated panel, flaring wings and rather flat, simple, integrally cast knobs, each with rounded concavity on the reverse. There is some minor damage and loss, ancient and modern, to three of the corners. The bow, with shallow hollow on the reverse, is broad and tapers very slightly towards the foot. Early Saxon silver gilt wrist-clasp hook-plate of Hines form C3. The hook itself is missing. Its scar at the break, flush with the front edge, is rather smooth, and may have been deliberately filed flat. On the rear edge two T-shaped spigots served to attach the clasp to the garment. Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch. Integral half round top knob with hollow reverse, rectangular central panel, trapezoidal wings both of which are damaged and missing outer edge and knops. Broken at bottom of central panel, bow and foot missing. Each side of central panel and at least the upper edge of each wing decorated with a line of stamped annulets. Pin lug on reverse filled and surrounded by iron corrosion from (missing) pin. All breaks ancient. Width of head plate 18mm, total length (at least) 36.5mm.

S’ PRIOR’ FRM PENIE Ih’V XPI LENIE (Seal of the Prior of the Brothers of Penitence of Jesus Christ of Lynn). There are contractions marks above M, IE, P and EN. The N’s are retrograde. The house of the Friars of the Sack or De Penitentia in Lynn had been founded by 1272(Emery 1943; 325) and was suppressed in or before 1307.

Incomplete silver gilt finger ring. The ring is made with a narrow band supposrting a square, lightly curved bezel that is decorated with Style 1 ornament within a simple border. The ornament is cryptic and composed of a 'helmeted' hip and two highly stylised legs associated with an unintelligible body. This runs obliquely across the field in the form of a double band that is broken by a single strand placed at right-angles across it. There also is a short, separate fragment of the loop.

Fragment of P-shaped or crossbow brooch. Broken at both ends. Lower bow of flat 'D' section ending with a single engraved transverse line above a pair of side notches, the footplate decorated with a pair of side notches, transverse line and another pair of side notches at the break. The catchplate does not survive. It is evidenced by a small broken backwards projection on the footplate, below which all of that side of the plate is missing. A rather flimsy example. Length 19mm, width 4mm. Weight 0.62g. 3rd - 4th century.

Sub-triangular flat silver object of uncertain date and function. Three cast-in-one roundels, with openwork apertures and sub-rectangular hole driven through the centre. The space between two roundels consists of a straight ribbed bar, whereas the other two links are undecorated and rounded on the outside edge. The area in the centre is decorated with cast cross-hatching. Measuring 20 x 20mm, maximum thickness 1mm, weighing 1.98g.

Incomplete silver finger ring. Most of D-sectioned (3 x 1mm), parallel-sided hoop is missing. The circular bezel (diameter 6.5mm) is cast integrally with, but is set on the outer surface of, the hoop. Its surface is flat and undecorated apart from a number of randomly distributed pecked impressions. On both sides of the bezel the hoop is decorated with three moulded grooves (3mm in length). Internal diameter c. 20mm, weighing 1.3g. This ring was reported as possible treasure under the Treasure Act 1996 and subsquently returned to the finder after being disclaimed as treasure.

Silver spoon with slip top terminal, hexagonal sectioned stem and pear shaped bowl. Next to a short triangular tail on the reverse of the bowl there is a stamped maker's mark AH on the end of the stem. There are no other marks. The bowl, crumpled when found, has been partly opened, and all the surfaces carry many scratches. Length 128mm (stem 75mm, bowl 53mm). Weight 18.03g / 0.636oz. Slip top spoons were current throughout the 16th century and went out of fashion in the middle of the 17th century. This example dates towards the end of this period.
