Lower Palaeolithic pointed ovate handaxe of Wymer's type E, unifacially and invasively knapped from a thermal or "potlid" fractured piece of white patinated flint, the dorsal (worked) face is patinated with a white "basket weave" with the original brown flint colour showing in-between, there is a small patch of worn and orange stained cortex where the flakes did not overlap towards the middle of this face. Description: Early Anglo-Saxon gold and garnet pendant, oval and slightly narrower at the apex than at the base. The sheet back-plate is rolled forward at the upper end to make a suspension loop with four longitudinal ribs. The setting comprises a dark red cabochon stone, presumably a garnet, with an off-centre angled polished face, set within a plain collar formed from a strip of gold sheet, the join clearly visible. Domed, formed from three layers; an upper silver decorated dome over a layer of corroded copper alloy before a further silver layer. From the top down; plain disc, narrow fluted baluster, constriction, tapering fluted baluster, two plain narrow mouldings, short length of hexagonal-sectioned stem before break. The end of the stem is damaged, perhaps partially molten or miscast on one side. Length (excluding surviving stem) 23.5mm. Diameter of disc 15mm. Weight 11.8g. Description: Three fragments of a medieval silver sheet object, possibly a scabbard chape, dating to c. AD 1200-1300. Late Bronze Age penannular ring fragment, or 'ring money'. Sub-oval-section, slightly flattened on the upper and lower face, with a copper alloy core and outer banded gold sheath. The banding appears lighter with an almost silvery colour on the outer face and a darker, slightly blackened appearance on the inner face. Broken at both ends with possible traces of having been cut or chopped. The exposed copper alloy surface is fairly corroded, suggesting ancient breaks. See NMS-5D0C86 for a similar complete example. Silver grosso of Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia), Rome, 1492-1503, adapted by the cutting out of a disc from the centre of the coin. The reason for this is uncertain; annular brooches are known which have been similarly treated but they are generally over two centuries earlier in date and have a hole drilled in the perimeter to accommodate a pin. Brooch manufactured by the addition of a copper-alloy backplate and pin to a silver penny of William I. The front of the brooch (the reverse of the coin) has been gilded, and the backplate and pin mechanism is attached centrally by means of a silver rivet. Twisted rectangular-sectioned shaft with a shallow ear-scoop at one end and a flat-sectioned lozengiform terminal forming a toothpick at the other, broken across the tip.
