Description: Copper-alloy strap-end of Thomas's Class A, Type 5, broadly 9th century in date. It is convex-sided, and the entire strap-end is in the form of a stylised animal head without a body. The split attachment end retains two silver rivets with large circular heads; the attachment end is shaped around these and has a small point in the centre. The animal head has elongated triangular ears which terminate at the attachment end and can be read as scrolling around (although the 'scroll' is a rather rectangular raised area) to include the silver rivets and to form the bi-convex att…

Middle to Late Anglo-Saxon silver strap-end. Most is missing, with a transverse break across the tapering plate leaving only a tiny section of the main decorative panel, which depicts foliate Trewhiddle-style tendrils. The animal-head terminal has circular ears, each with a crescentic groove. Below the ears it is chamfered to either side to form the snout; within these chamfers are two small blind holes for eyes. Between the chamfers is a roughly lozengiform panel whose upper point extends up between the ears to end in a small circle. This panel is decorated with a decayed niello inla…

One prong of the spacer is now detached, and there is some damage to the sides of the plates, which taper in straight lines towards the knop. The attachment edge is missing, but enough is extant to indicate a grooved round aperture in the centre. Almost identical engraved decoration on both plates near the attachment edge consists of a pear-shaped fruit between two curving stems ending in…
