Possible gold strap-end, buckle-plate or fragment of unidentified object, perhaps a back-plate. Description: Triangular gold sheet with a straight short edge, one slightly curved long edge and one straight long edge. There are two empty holes punched through from one face at the short edge, and two punched through from the opposite face near the rounded point, one of which is through the long straight edge. The slightly asymmetric shape and incomplete hole suggest the object was originally shield-shaped and has been cut longitudinally. One face has peeled back at the right-angle…

Late Saxon silver tongue-shaped strap-end of Thomas's Class E, Type 5, apparently re-used as a brooch. The attachment edge is recessed on the front, with a separate rectangular front-plate to secure the (missing) strap. It is attached with four rivets with rounded heads (one head missing), each surrounded by an annulet made from twisted silver wire. Middle or Late Saxon copper alloy strap-end, Thomas' (2003) Class A. Split-end, convex sides, probably originally with an animal head terminal although now too worn and damaged to discern the features. A rectangular panel on the plate may depict a beast originally reserved on an inlaid field. The attachment edge is also damaged although it may be broken across a single rivet hole. Length 24mm. Width12.5mm. Circa 9th century. The strap-end is very small for the type, and unfortunately damaged and corroded, making the features difficult to discern.

Description: Copper-alloy strap-end of Thomas's Class A, Type 5, broadly 9th century in date. It is convex-sided, and the entire strap-end is in the form of a stylised animal head without a body. The split attachment end retains two silver rivets with large circular heads; the attachment end is shaped around these and has a small point in the centre. The animal head has elongated triangular ears which terminate at the attachment end and can be read as scrolling around (although the 'scroll' is a rather rectangular raised area) to include the silver rivets and to form the bi-convex att…

Middle to Late Anglo-Saxon silver strap-end. Most is missing, with a transverse break across the tapering plate leaving only a tiny section of the main decorative panel, which depicts foliate Trewhiddle-style tendrils. The animal-head terminal has circular ears, each with a crescentic groove. Below the ears it is chamfered to either side to form the snout; within these chamfers are two small blind holes for eyes. Between the chamfers is a roughly lozengiform panel whose upper point extends up between the ears to end in a small circle. This panel is decorated with a decayed niello inla…
