Post-medieval silver seal matrix. Octagonally faceted handle with triple ribbed collar and globular terminal pierced for suspension. Maker's marks stamped twice on the reverse, both worn but probably BC or BG with a pellet above and below within an oval. There is a well-defined line of differential patination inset from but following the edge of the reverse which goes through both marks. Incised bell with canons, vertical ribs on the crown, a band of dots and transverse ribs on the body, the clapper protruding below the rim, with an inner single line and outer beaded border. Late medieval silver seal matrix. Hexagonally faceted handle with ribbed collar before pierced quatrefoil terminating in a circular suspension loop pierced in the same plane. Circular, stag's head with a cross between the antlers, foliate sprigs and r b in black letter to either side, all within a cabled border. The stag and cross may relate to St Hubert or St Eustace. Diameter 14mm. Height 27mm. Weight 7.7g. Probably late medieval or early post-medieval, 1400 - 1600.

Bishop facing left and holding a crozier, with a star above a fleur-de-lis in front and a sprig behind. The lug is considerably worn. + S' OFFICIALITATIS : HERFORDENSIS The literal translation is "Seal of the Herefordian Officiality" The Official (Officialis) was a legal officer of the Bishop, and his office was called the Officiality (Officialitas). 13th - 14th century.

Blazon: A saltire charged with a mullet on a canton a lion passant guardant impaling on a fess two fleurs-de-lis between two fleurs-de-lis in chief and two in base. 18th century.

An incomplete oval, concave-sided, hollow, composite silver seal matrix. The reverse is broken with a joining fragment with a separately cast and applied decorative trefoil sprig. The central setting (probably an intaglio) is missing. There is a separate ribbed loop at upper edge. The inscription reads * : FEMME : SANZ : LOYAVTE (Woman without loyalty). 13th-14th century. Measuring 22 x 20mm, empty bezel 14 x 12mm.

S’ PRIOR’ FRM PENIE Ih’V XPI LENIE (Seal of the Prior of the Brothers of Penitence of Jesus Christ of Lynn). There are contractions marks above M, IE, P and EN. The N’s are retrograde. The house of the Friars of the Sack or De Penitentia in Lynn had been founded by 1272(Emery 1943; 325) and was suppressed in or before 1307.

Crot, which also appears as a surname Crote or Croot, is a nickname from the Middle English crut ‘lump or clod’ (ibid. 118). Thirteenth century.
