Unidentified object probably from horse harness. The surviving part of the plate is circular and decorated with an engraved octofoil, before a constriction after which the plate expands slightly before a break. Traces of gilding survive in the engraved lines. A rectangular lug terminating in an integral rivet projects down from the edge of the plate on the reverse, with a similar lug without integral rivet or any evidence of a break projecting from the reverse of the constricted part of the plate. When attached the lugs would have ensured a gap was left between the plate and the surfa…

Roman copper alloy strap-mounted and skirted terret ring. The oval-sectioned loop is broken with just under half surviving, above a collar before a lozengiform skirt with rounded knops at each corner. The skirt is angled down at the front and back, and up at each side, partially concealing an oval-sectioned, curved attachment loop. One side of the skirt is missing. Other terrets of this type are known from Norfolk, e.g. from Newton FLotman (NMS-DCB9F2, HER40445). Protected loop terrets are usually considered to be Roman, dating to the late first and second centuries AD. Maximum …

Incomplete Romano-British copper alloy protected-loop terret. Just over half of the circular-sectioned ring, which springs from a collar with a deep groove on each long face, is missing. Almost all of the original edge of the skirt is missing, the one short section of surviving edge possibly suggesting a multifoil form, with a curved, round-sectioned attachment loop benieth. The surviving part of the ring, which does not appear to be distorted, shows the loop was a shallow oval. Surviving height 32mm. Surviving length and width of skirt 32mm and 24mm. Late 1st century.

This group of three later Iron Age copper alloy objects recovered from near King's Lynn, Norfolk comprises two enamelled flat-ring terrets and a miscellaneous flat ring terret. The terrets are of the same type, however, one is in relatively good condition, being nearly complete and the other is in three pieces with a part missing. The complete terret has a rectangular sectioned attachment bar that is flanked on either end with moulded collars each decorated with a median groove. The flattened ring of the terret, which gives the type its name, provides a large area for decoration. This…

Late Saxon incomplete bridle mount or cheek piece decorated with engraved Ringerike style ornament. A terminal loop joins a D-section shank on which there is a small boss before an expansion with moulded sides. An arm projecting at right angles from the junction is also moulded and has engraved decoration. It is pierced near the end by a rectangular hole that is round and countersunk on the reverse, and is surrounded by a small amount of iron staining. The junction is pierced by a similar rectangular hole slightly off-centre. The reverse of the junction is very roughly finished and th…
