Incomplete copper alloy buckle frame of extraordinary form, corroded and broken, trapezoidal, with the outside edge consisting of a huge animal head with a longitudinal oval aperture formed by the open mouth, one bent obliquely angled oval-sectioned side with engraved transverse grooves survives, the other side and the straight narrowed bar are missing. There is a rounded sub-triangular perforation in the base of the animal-head near the inner edge forming a pin-bar, pin missing. Very unusual pair of unfinished jointly cast buckle frames, vertically conjoined side-to-side, bent at join, both oval (width 12mm, height c. 21.5mm) with broad outside edge of flattened D-shaped section and offset narrowed bar. 12 x (unbent) 43mm. Cf. Dress Access. no. 271. 13th - 14th century. Important find, a rare example of evidence for manufacturing.

Asymmetrical copper alloy buckle frame, one loop trapezoidal, the other D-shaped, with narrow rib or lobe at both ends of bar, filed pin notch and two pairs of oblique groves on straight outside edge and very elaborate openwork inside edge. In outline this is heart-shaped with an ovoid knop at the base (i.e. the terminal) and three apertures, one large and heart-shaped between two smaller and round. Very finely engraved radial lines on the knop may have been intended to depict a scallop shell. Closely related to less intricate frames such as Whitehead 2003 nos. 583-5, 591 and 593. 35 …

Engraved decoration in the form of opposed lines zig-zags / waves in two lines either side of the pin slot, a border around the edge of the plate, a wavy transverse line and straight line behind the pin slot. Frame 17 x 28.5. Plate 19 x 21.5mm. 13th- 14th century.
