The short neck is polished with a shallow line engraved at the front. This was probably already cut down from a longer neck in Antiquity when it was most likely inserted into a bust made of another precious material. Description: A miniature head of Socrates. Alabaster figure of a knight, carved in the round, broken and incomplete, comprising eight joining fragments. The knight is missing most of one ear, one elbow, his hands and most of his legs. He has ring-and-dots for eyes, exaggeratedly large perforated ears, protruding lips and a beard around his cheeks and chin but no moustache. He wears a conical helmet with nasal (nose-guard) and a long-sleeved mail hauberk under his surcoat. A cast copper alloy Roman figurine of a ram. It is well modelled with the raised head turned slightly to one side. It has curling horns, incised pointed oval shaped eyes and details on the horns and coat with a scalloped skirt around body. The recessed underside is roughly finished and has a small rectangular central depression. The legs and tail are broken. It is 42mm in length and at least 35mm wide. The ram and the goat are cult emblems of Mercury and either can be shown accompanying the god (Green 1978, 26).
