Medieval lead seal matrix, flat, pointed oval, 37mm x 24mm with (squashed) pierced lug on reverse at top of median rib flanked by stylised plant ornament in relief. Fleur-de-lis. S·SARE·HODE·CROT (Seal of Sara Hode “the clod”). Hode, or Hood, is a common surname ‘meaning maker of hoods’ (Reaney 1991, 234). Crot, which also appears as a surname Crote or Croot, is a nickname from the Middle English crut ‘lump or clod’ (ibid. 118). Thirteenth century.

Late 10th - early 11th century. Cf. Broadly similar examples in Pederson 1997-8 'Bidselbesag fra Bøgeskov Strand' KUML (Denmark), figs.2 and 3, nos.1 and 2.

Late Saxon copper alloy fragment probably of a trefoil brooch (or possibly strap-end), corroded, tongue-shaped, flat-sectioned with rounded terminal and incised stylised decoration of concentric lines between single ring-and-dot on both sides and one at terminal, 15 x (at least) 25mm. The Jellinge-style decoration is possibly a debased zoomorphic design and is similar in feel to a fragment of a strap-end illustrated in Wallis (forthcoming) Mill Lane, Thetford sf.5. 10th century.

Sheet roller on constricted outside edge, frame with slightly convex sides and ridge near each corner, rectangular buckle plate folded widthways, slightly recessed for frame with circular perforation for missing pin and single copper alloy rivet at attachment end, contains remains of cloth strap, 34 x 14mm. Form closely related to that of folding strap clasps, cf. Dress Access. (1991) 116-120. Late 13th-early 15th century.

Strongly convex blade which is wide in proportion to its length, with an almost straight back which continues the line of the socket and begins to curve upwards towards the missing point. The socket is almost closed and is broken across the nail-hole. Manning (1985, 120-2, plte 57) Type 1b, The form of the cleaver is closest to Q96. The majoity of these cleavers were used for butchering meat and intended for chopping rather than slicing.

Iron Age / Romano-British Langton Down brooch, spring, pin and foot missing. A faint line of probably engraved zig-zag or rocker-arm across the top of the head, while the front is decorated in relief with a triangular moulding enclosing three dots, between two scroll mouldings. Cf. Hattatt no.270, “hooks and eyes”. Below a transverse groove at the top the D-section bow is apparently undecorated. A continental variety, so called Nertomarus type, Hattatt (1985), 36. First half 1st century
