Flat, silver, angular shield-shaped object inscribed WC 1643, the date and the owner's initials, within an engraved linear border with multiple transverse lines. The heads of two separate silver rivets are flush with the front face and their shanks bent over onto the reverse. Silver pendant shield with an integral loop at the apex, probably a vervel of Lewis and Richardson type C.iii. The shield is engraved on both faces: Fr Man / nock of / giffardes / hall // in Stoke / in Suf. / esquire . Two similar objects are illustrated in the Treasure Annual Report 2004 nos.319-320. The better parallel of the two, no.320 (from Suffolk), is described as being 'possibly from horse harness' which is most unlikely. Edward Martin has kindly supplied the following genealogical data: Francis Mannock Esq. succeeded his father William at Gifford's Hall, Stoke by Nayland, in …

A possible hawking vervel. Flat sectioned ring inscribed W SPRYNG around one face and OF PAKENHAM around the other. The A and M of Pakenham are ligatured. Similar to an example from Emneth (2007 T305). Pakenham is in Suffolk. c. 17th century. Sir William Spring of Packenham (d. 1638) was knighted by Charles I in 1611 and served as Member of Parliament for Bury St. Edmunds in 1625. He had a son, also called Sir William Spring (1613 - 1654) who was made a baronet. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Spring_of_Pakenham] It seems likely that the vervel could have belonged to either S…

A possibly Middle or Late Saxon object. A trapezoidal fragment of silver sheet with engraved and niello-inlaid decoration on one face. One edge, which is followed by a line of fine hatching and an engraved line (forming a kind of ladder pattern), may be original, while of two others cutting across the decoration, one (longer and at right angles to the ladder pattern) is clearly chopped. There is a single off-centre circular hole (diameter 2 mm) pushed through from the reverse. The nature of the decoration is uncertain. There appear to be two fields bounded by straight lines enclo…

Treasure report from Dr Andrew Rogerson: Incomplete and distorted silver unidentified object: two identical hollow cones of octagonal section are soldered together at their bases, and four rings (one missing) are soldered to the joint; these appear to be for suspension. At both apices there is a jagged break. The date and function is uncertain, but it may perhaps be a knop from the stem of a vessel. It may be more than three hundred years old.

Probably Roman, fragment of unidentified object: >1mm thick, probably cast plate, broken at both ends but with apparently original curving inner and outer edges. 12mm wide at both breaks, it widens towards the centre where there is round perforation (diammeter 6mm) and, on the outer edge, a sub-square, thickened lug. If the complete object was annular and had an opposing lug, it would have measured c.70mm, with an internal diameter of c.30mm.
