Fragment of a medieval silver pin, comprising a polyhedral pinhead and the stub of a collared shaft. The surviving part of the shaft is circular in section with a thicker, circular collar. The pin-head is in the form of a cube with the corners cut off, creating lozengiform and triangular facets. Each facet (except for the base from which the broken shaft projects), is engraved with some traces of niello surviving. The uppermost lozengiform field has a long line projecting inwards from the centre of each edge with a short line to either side creating a cruciform motif with each arm …

Bone pin, bodkin or toilet article, probably Roman, perhaps post-medieval. Sub-oval sectioned shaft, straight-sided before tapering smoothly for just under half its length to a broken tip. The head, which is crudely finished, is formed from (from the shaft up) a bi-conical moulding, a flanged moulding, a thinned sub-rectangular panel tapering at the upper end before a thicker sub-triangular or shield-shaped panel (point upwards), terminating in a large circular loop. There are file marks over much of the shaft and head. Length 151mm. Maximum width 12mm. Maximum thickness 7mm. Th…

Description: Ball-headed pin head made from gold with filigree wire and pellet decoration. The pin head is hollow and globular, with a circular hole at each end surrounded by an annulet of beaded wire; the upper and lower half are separated by a border of a line of beaded wire either side of what appears now to be a plain wire, but on closer inspection is actually a beaded wire worn down so that the beads have almost disappeared. This triple-strand border probably conceals a soldered join. Both halves are decorated alike, with two-ply twisted wire forming three pairs of opposed S- …

Iron Age ring-headed pin, cast in one with ring joined to the shoulder by a bulbous moulding between two low ribs with continuous transverse grooves giving the appearance of pellets. The outer edge of the ring is followed by a median rib decorated in a similar fashion. A small hole passes through the shank immediately below the head and at the top of a curving length of shank. There is a slight circular depression in the surface at the end of the hole below the decorative moulding. All the facets are engraved with geometric designs inlaid with niello, now partially decomposed and missing, making the details unclear, but the upper triangular faces all appear to be decorated with a triangular outline of niello with a short line running inwards from one side; two of the the lozengiform facets at least may have a roughly cross-shaped or quatrefoil outline. Gilded silver pin of probable middle Anglo-Saxon date. Solid globular head, slightly flattened on top, with a large, uneven, separately applied collar made from rectangular-sectioned wire wrapped around the top of the incomplete circular-sectioned shaft. Although it is likely from its form that this pin dates to the middle Anglo-Saxon period (8th or 9th century), it is unusual in two respects. Firstly, although m…

Hollow head of a Middle to Late Anglo-Saxon gilded silver ball-headed pin, with thirteen bosses containing colourless glass pellets (five missing, others incomplete). Each boss has a filigree collar of plain twisted wire between plain wire rings, and in the spaces between the bosses there are smaller plain wire rings or annulets. At the base there is a roughly circular hole where the shaft has been torn away. The breaks are corroded, so are not recent, but are also crisp and unworn; perhaps the bosses projecting around the hole protected the breaks, or alternatively they may be ancien…

Head and part of shaft from a gilded silver pin, possibly middle Anglo-Saxon in date. Globular head, wider than it is tall; broken circular-sectioned shaft. No collar between head and shaft. There is gilding on the head and shaft but the pin is otherwise undecorated. Perhaps medieval or post-medieval, but more likely to be middle Anglo-Saxon, 8th or 9th century; there is a parallel in terms of material and basic shape, although with spiral grooved decoration and a collar, on the database at LIN-D22765. Diameter of head 8mm. Surviving length 13mm. Weight 1.83g.
