Probable silver ingot. Rectangular-sectioned with irregular but unbroken terminals and multiple shallow transverse hammer marks on the long faces. Measuring 13 x 6 x 5mm. Weight 1.77g / 27.4 grains. The weight of 27.4 grains corresponds very closely with 1 avoirdupois dram (27.3grains) although this is probably a coincidence. The hammer marks may indicate a Late Saxon date.

Two fragments of non-joining silver probable ingots; rectangular-sectioned, the reverse and one side flat, the other side and upper face particularly irregular with hammer marks. Both ends appear to have been partially cut into on the upper face and then broken. Breaks not recent. Surviving maximum dimensions 17 x 4.5 x 3.5m. Weight 1.7g (27gn). rectangular section with the corners cut off (bevelled on each long edge), complete and blunt at one end, the other end cut into on all four sides and then broken in in centre. Possible Late Saxon ingot of flat ovoid form, i.e. with almost parallel straight sides, rounded ends and two broad faces. Of the latter one is almost level but with slight signs of transverse hammering, and the other is very slightly concave. Length 46.5mm. Width 20.5mm. Thickness 5.5mm. Weight 33.90g. It has been suggested that copper alloy ingots from Norfolk of bar-like form and with transverse hammering may belong to the Viking period (Geake, H. Medieval Archaeol. 2001, 242-3). This example bears no obvious relationship with the 25g/26g unit suggested from Viking-Age silver ingots…

Silver ingot. Irregular rectangular-section (each face is a different width), with an ancient break at one end and one side curving inwards towards the unbroken end. Three faces are stamped with pairs of opposed, single-pelleted triangles or angular figures-of-eight; 5 broken across a 6th on one face, 2, and 6 possibly broken across a 7th. Worn transverse lines or notches on one edge are too slight to be certainly deliberate and there are no hammer marks. The stamp is a decorative motif and typically occurs on jewellery of the Viking period, e.g. a fragment of a silver arm-ring and…

Description: An ingot, analysed and found to be a high-tin pewter. Cast metal bar, one end rounded, the other distorted and broken. The section is plano-convex, tending to trapezoidal near the broken end. The surface of the curved face is uneven with numerous longitudinal striations, that of the straight face smooth. Near the very rough fracture the object has been bent, and there is transverse concavity, probably caused by pressure on the convex face. Small cracks on the convex surface are probably the result of post-depositional damage. The ingot weighs 113.62g. Analysis: Non-de…

Discoidal silver ingot with rather poorly defined facets on parts of side as a result of hammering. There are a pair of small hollows near one edge of one face and short radial and oblique grooves at the edge of the other. The latter were probably cut to test the quality of the metal. The form, however, is quite unlike bar ingots that were the norm in the late 9th century. Possibly Late Saxon. Diameter 15 - 16mm, thickness 3 - 3.5mm, weighing 6.18g / 95.4grains, perhaps for a 1/4 of an eyrir, the Viking-Age unit of weight of 25g/26g.
