Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Late palaeolithic double-ended scraper. Segment of a large blade with a single crest in a chocolate brown stained flint. Both ends appear to have been steeply retouched to give a double ended scraper but both have suffered ancient damage. The distal edge has small neat retouch scars at both ends but the central part of the edge has two larger scars with evidence of crushing on the ventral side. The proximal end appears to have been damaged by the loss of a large chip and shows slight evidence of crushing on the ventral edge. The find spot is near one of the head ways of the River Wens…

'Handaxe' Dimensions 102 x 62 x 56mm.
In blackish flint and of roughly plano-convex section, this biface can be considered as having a rounded butt end and an opposed pointed end, It has a small area of thin weathered cortex on the narrow crest but is otherwise flaked overall. With the pointed end away from the observer, the right side face is formed by two large flake removals and two smaller, the left face by one large removal and several smaller ones. The 'base' has a number of smaller removals and a line of battering along its length
The condition is rolled except for the po…

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Late Upper Palaeolithic long blade which appears to be struck with a soft hammer from a single platform core. Flake directions are difficult to observe as the piece is heavily patinated white with some small areas of spotty iron staining. The proximal end is missing, broken recently and revealing unpatinated black flint. One lateral edge has been steeply retouched along its length at a later date, perhaps during the Neolithic or Bronze Age and has a light grey patination. Such re-use is uncommon, but not unknown. It shows that this piece had been lost or discarded and found several th…

County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Polished Axe, dimensions: 169 x 61 x 34mm. Highly ground and polished all over, with only a few faint flake scars visible at the lateral edges and rounded butt: the sides are ground round rather than flat. The curved cutting edge is sharp with only one ancient chip, while a recent small chip reveals pale grey flint. The axe is patinated light brown with some buff areas. Found in the 1960's and subsequently used as a paperweight. Neolithic (4,000 to 2,350BC)
