A Silver strap-end of Thomas 2003 Class A Type 1. The attachment edge missing and it is broken across two rivet holes at the split end. The decoration on the front face was once inlaid with niello of which none survives. At the upper end a fan-shaped field contains a palmette motif. On the main part, between billeted sides, a central lozenge containing a cross and with a D-shaped field at each corner, is surrounded by four fields each containing a Trewhiddle style animal. Medieval copper alloy strap-end. Trapezoidal, with separate front-plate, back-plate and side and end strips. The narrower attachment end is bi-convex with a central notch and goove on the front and back, with two copper alloy rivets. A fragment of the probably leather strap is preserved in the socket. See Egan and Pritchard (2002) 139, fig.90, no.642 for an example from a late 14th century context, and an example from the collections of the Museum of London.

Strap-end. An elaborate composite strap-end consisting of a front-plate, full-width sheet spacer, and an additional rectangular mount on the front face of the rectangular terminal knop decorated with radiating grooves. The front plate is broken at the attachment edge just above the terminal of the spacer. Two rivets survive, protruding slightly from the spacer. Middle or Late Saxon copper alloy strap-end, Thomas' (2003) Class A, Type 5. Damaged and incomplete split-end with the remains of two rivets, slightly convex sides, very worn en-face animal head terminal with prominent ears. The plate is decorated with a symetrical design consisting of three sets of opposed spirals eminating and comma-shaped fields eminating from a central branch. Wear and corrosion makes the exact eliments of the design difficult to decipher, but inlaid silver wire and probably niello (now missing) have been used. 9th - 10th century.

Tongue-shaped plate with deeply cast decoration on the front face only consisting of a transverse rib before symmetrical stylised foliage in the form of loops and scrolls eminating from a central stem which projects slightly beyond the end of the plate forming a terminal knop.

Width12.5mm. Circa 9th century.
The strap-end is very small for the type, and unfortunately damaged and corroded, making the features difficult to discern.
