Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published
2 medieval silver coins found within two feet of each other. Both are groats of similar date in very good condition, and it seems likely that they went into the ground together. They are:
Edward IV, London, cinquefoil initial mark with rose on breast, Type XXI, North 1631, weight 3.13g, 1480-3
Henry VII, London, crosslet initial mark, North 1747, weight 3.07g, 1504-7
The later groat has hardly seen any circulation and so it seems likely that the hoard was lost or deposited late in the first decade of the 16th century or early in the second.

Treasure report by Adrian Marsden: A hoard of cu alloy objects found in close association with one another and very close to a radiate imitation manufacturer's hoard found in November 2004 (see file). These comprise two RB bracelets and 10 sestertii of the second century. The coins, where condition at deposition can be ascertained, were all heavily worn, suggesting a mid-third century date. This suggests that both bracelets and coins were intended for melting down to produce radiate imitations, a theory made more likely by the fact that one sestertius appears to have had pieces cut…

The coin has been gilded and been pierced near the edge at 6 o'clock on the obverse, and it is probable that the modified coin was used as a pendant. The sharp condition of the coin suggests that this adaptation does not date very long after the striking of the coin, probably in the 1560s.

A post medieval silver threepence of Charles II dating to c.1664-70. This has been gilded and pierced at the 12 o'clock position on the obverse. A tremissis or pseudo-tremissis of the 7th century, which has been pierced and gilded for use as a pendant. The tremissis is a coin type widely issued by the Merovingian Franks in this period, but also produced by the Anglo-Saxons and Frisians. Such coins were produced in fairly good gold at the beginning of the century, but with the gold contained declining as the century progressed, with the gold increasingly replaced by silver. The design on this example is relatively crude, and could represent either a Merovingian coin or an imitation produced elsewhere. Its gold content is c. 41-4…

Two coins of William I, a penny of the 'Bonnet' type and a cut halfpenny of the same issue. They were found close together and, given the unlikelihood of finding two strays of these rare coins, they must surely represent part of a small hoard or, given the presence of the cut half, more probably a purse loss. The coins were minted circa 1068-70 and the date of their loss or deposition is unlikely to be very many years later. We may presume a date of loss in the 1070s.

Two Late Saxon pennies found 30m apart. Both are PAX type pennies of Harold II Godwinson dating to 1066 and both are, furthermore, struck from the same pair of dies. The moneyer is Godric of Thetford. It is inconceivable that two coins of this period struck from the same pair of dies could have come to be lost separately so closely together and we are surely dealing with part of a group of coins that went into the ground together. Such a group, of two silver coins or more and of more than 300 years age, qualifies as Treasure.
The coins are rather flat-struck but have seen little …

Neolithic flint pick. Dimensions 416 x 66 x 49mm.
Brown staining over dark grey / black flint. Rhombic section with sharp ridge on one face, largely formed by a natural cleavage plane (ancient frost fracture), the other face flaked entirely with a more rounded medial ridge. The dark brown patination suggests a probable peaty deposition, there is a trace of concretion on one face, most likely an accumulation of iron oxides and grit. All flake scars appear to be fairly hard hammer struck with some removals exhibiting a deep negative bulbs of percussion.
