Medieval gold finger ring. The band is flat internally, with nine angled concave mouldings separated by segmented ribs externally. Each moulding is engraved with a floral spray consisting of either a pointed flower head on a stem with two pairs of leaves or a five petalled flower above a single pair of leaves, both types with a transverse line with radiating lines below at the base indicating the ground. The type and orientation of the flower heads are arranged (up and down being arbitrary) - pointed down, pointed up, five petals down, pointed up, pointed down, five petals up, pointed down, pointed up, five petals down. The engraving is keyed and was almost certainly filled with enamel or niello, no certain traces of which survive.
External diameter 20mm. Internal diameter 16.5mm. Width of band 5mm. Weight 3.7g.
For a very similar late 14th century example see Oman (1974, pl.21A). For examples with a bezel but similar decoration on the band see NARC-F8A45E and SOM-21BA62, both 15th century.

Fragment of medieval silver, gilded finger ring. The band is faceted externally to form concave lozengiform fields with smaller triangular fields between, rising to form a point where the corners of four fields meet. The surviving triangular fields are plain, the lozengiform fields engraved with four lines forming a border around a star or sunburst formed from radiating engraved lines. Plain internally. The surviving fragment consists of one complete lozengiform field and two incomplete.
Width of band 6mm. Weight 0.6g. Not enough survives to estimate the original diameter.
For broadly similar but more complete examples see Oman (1974, pl. 21, B and Pl. 66C) and NMS-9F1A05 (Norfolk HER28924) which has plain facets on the hoop and a bezel. Circa 15th century.

Medieval silver finger ring of the Fede type. The rectangular-sectioned band expands smoothly to form the bezel, which is crudely engraved to represent two clasped hands, with a pair of transverse lines to either side probably indicating cuffs. Now slightly squashed, cracked at the rear of the hoop, with a small part of one side of the bezel missing. Measuring 20 x 21mm. Width of bezel 5.5mm. Weight 1.58g. For examples executed in a similar style see BH-F24F68, LON-3E20A2 and HAMP-9E4BC9. Circa 1400 - 1500.

Late medieval or early post-medieval gold posy ring. Very shallow D-sectioned band decorated externally with three rows of stamped square cells leaving a grid pattern in low relief. There is no trace of inlay surviving in the cells. Inscribed internally in roman capitals CONTINV x CONSTANT x. A small worn mark at the beginning of the inscription is probably another x. The ring is now bent out of shape and damaged in several places. Both the external decoration and internal inscription have several parallels including LON-DD00A6 and IOW-1C6D62.
Width of band 3mm. Now measuring 24 x 11mm. Weight 1.4g. 16th - 17th century.
The inscription features on several rings in the collection of the British Museum. One example (1961,1202.65) with a plain exterior band was found in the Fleet Ditch in the City of London in 1868 and donated to the British Museum in 1961 by Dame Joan Evans. It is inscribed 'x CONTINEW x CONSTANT x' and is dated to the 16th/17th centuries.

Medieval silver finger ring. The rectangular-sectioned band is inscribed externally in black letter with the names of the three kings or magi, + caspar x melchiar x baltasar. The inscription starts with a cross-corsslets and each word is separated by a small x. Black letter was used to inscribe rings from the mid 14th to 16th century (Oman, 1974, 5). For a similar but fragmentary ring see NMS-EDFA64. The names of the three kings were a popular as amuletic charms in the later medieval period. Probably 14th - 15th century.

Description: Undated gold finger ring. Sheet band with median repoussé rib. There are at least two transverse creases which may indicate a join but the ring is slightly distorted, making this uncertain.
Dimensions: External diameter 20mm. Width of band 7.5mm. Weight 2.29g.
Discussion: Images of the ring have been seen by British Museum curators including Gillian Varndell, Neil Wilkin, Richard Hobbs and Barry Ager, and they have concluded that it cannot securely be dated to any particular period. It must therefore remain undated, and so does not fall under the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996. For a similar example see NMS610, which was also declared Not Treasure.

The hoop is circular, the same width throughout, and D-shaped in cross-section with decoration on the convex exterior. The decoration is incised and punched, and inlaid with black enamel. It consists of four panels of two repeated designs. Design 1 is a rectangle with one forked or swallow-tailed end and one pointed end, forming a pennant shape. The point contains oblique ridges alternating with rows of beading; the rest of the shape is filled with incised plant-like motifs made from short grooves. Either side of this main design are bare (unenamelled) grooves forming V shapes which echo either end of the enamelled pennant shape.
Design 2 has nine small tadpole-like motifs, made simply from a punched dot with a punched wiggly tail. From the photograph, the tadpole shapes also appear to be filled with black enamel. Both the pennants and grooves flow around the ring one way, and the tailed tadpole shapes swim in the opposite direction.
Much of the black enamel is still present and the ring edges are still relatively unabraded, suggesting the ring has not been worn much prior to loss.
Dimensions: External diameter 17mm, internal diameter 15mm. Width of hoop (from photograph) 5mm. Weight 2.6g.
Discussion: Design 1 is possibly iconographic, and is tentatively interpreted as depicting bull rushes and a basket representing baby Moses on the Nile. Design 2 may represent the high-status heraldic fur ermine; a gold field with black spots is a later medieval heraldic symbol known as 'erminois'. Ermine is often symbolically associated with purity throughout the medieval period. The small size of this ring may mean that is was made to be worn by a small hand or perhaps a child. Compare NMS-8C2E68 (2016T434), which also has the tadpole-like ermine motifs.
Date: The use of oblique ridges alternating with lines of beading, and decoration made up of short grooves, recalls finger-ring designs of the 15th and 16th centuries. As the object is made of more than 10% precious metal and is over 300 years old, it constitutes potential Treasure under the Treasure Act 1996.

Fragment of medieval silver finger ring. Flat-sectioned band, now almost flat, narrowing slightly towards the breaks. The upper face is divided into three rectangular panels separated by grooves with multiple closely spaced transverse lines, broken across another groove at each end. Each panel is engraved with a different motif; a single line border with a diagonal line connecting each corner to form a cross with possible stippling, a single line border around a lozenge with two diagonal lines forming a cross with stippling in the resulting four small lozengiform panels, and a single line border with a short internal dash in the centre of each edge leaving a stippled cross. The engraved lines may once have contained niello but none now survives.
Surviving length 22mm. Maximum surviving width 10mm. Weight 1.5g.
12th Century.

Late medieval or post-medieval silver, gilded finger ring. Plain internally, decorated externally with a central D-sectioned rib with a narrow rib of closely spaced stamped annulets to either side, with an outer groove on each side before raised edges. Gilding survives internally and on the groove and annulet stamped ribs. Gilding does not survive on the central rib except within the stamped decoration and as irregular dots or squares either side of short disconnected stamped dashes at alternating angles, perhaps intended as a disconnected zig-zag with a gilded dot in each angle but irregularly executed with dots and dashes misplaced. There are also six irregularly placed stamped annulets on the central rib.
Silver, gilded rings with similar decoration recorded on the PAS database include SOM-5DA990, SUR-3144B1, NMS-620BD1 (HER 59691,Fincham, Norfolk) and GLO-FDFE16.
External diameter 22.5mm. Internal diameter 19mm. Width of band 7.5mm. Weight 3.9g.
Circa 1500 - 1700.
