Silver grosso of Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia), Rome, 1492-1503, adapted by the cutting out of a disc from the centre of the coin. The reason for this is uncertain; annular brooches are known which have been similarly treated but they are generally over two centuries earlier in date and have a hole drilled in the perimeter to accommodate a pin. The fashion for making annular brooches out of coins seems to have died out long before the last decade of the 15th century when this grosso was struck. It is probable that another function was intended for this large silver washer but wha…

Silver gros tournois of Loius IX of France, issued 1266-70, gilded on the obverse and with the remains of clasp fittings attached to the reverse. This transforming of a coin to a brooch (or clasp) was a common phenomenon in the late 13th century and a number of similar examples are known including several from Norfolk (Marsden 2014, 90-2). The adaption also means that the coin is treated as an object and, being a precious metal artefact of more than 300 years age, is thus a case of Treasure. Diameter 26mm. Weight 4.38g. Medieval silver brooch with circular, open frame, almost circular-sectioned with slight flattening on the inside, inlaid with niello in a combination of encircling and criss-crossed lines, now very worn in places. The pin is cast in the form of a sword, with a tapering lozengiform-section, upwardly curved quillons with scrolled ends, and tabs folded around the frame to form the attachment loop. All four facets of the pin are engraved with a line of rocker-arm zigzags, with a dot in each of the resulting inner triangles on the front face. The front face of the edge of the quillons is r…

Two coins of William I, a penny of the 'Bonnet' type and a cut halfpenny of the same issue. They were found close together and, given the unlikelihood of finding two strays of these rare coins, they must surely represent part of a small hoard or, given the presence of the cut half, more probably a purse loss. The coins were minted circa 1068-70 and the date of their loss or deposition is unlikely to be very many years later. We may presume a date of loss in the 1070s. Catalogue 1. William I, Bonnet type, cut halfpenny, moneyer Godefurth of Norwich, North 842, weight 0.63g. F…

Late medieval or post-medieval silver, gilded incomplete mount or badge in the form of a cherubic figure standing over a probable beast, serpent or dragon. The figure's right arm is raised and broken before the elbow, the left arm by its side, possibly reaching for the beast, the head inclined slightly towards the beast, the right leg broken at the knee. The left leg is unclear and may be the head of a horse the figure is riding, or a leg straddling the beast. The mount is very worn and clearly broken around much of the edge, but the details of the figures face and hair can still be s…
