Basal mount with two (distorted) rectangular strap loops and Y-shaped upright rotating stem for the suspension of two horse harness pendants. An unusual feature is the bifurcation near the top of the stem, just above which the two parts split into two round-ended pierced arms. Normally the stem holds a banner or a single pendant set sideways at the top (N. Griffiths FRG Datasheet 5 (1986) figs .22-3) or multiple arms (normally four) spring from a rotating sphere (ibid. figs. 24-5). Loops c.15 x 6mm internally. Length c.57mm. Height 43mm. Rectangular externally, oval internally with 'slot', split end which opens into the slot and central aperture, tiny rabbet in each corner at attachment edge, straight sides expanding slightly towards convex outside edge formed by two addorsed animal heads with prominent brow ridges and snouts, central groove on underside of the animal heads. Sprung copper alloy Dolphin brooch. Hexagonal sectioned bow with a pair of median grooves along its back from the head to foot, tapering slightly towards foot which has a flat, blunt terminal, most of catch-plate survives. 'C' sectioned wings with one transverse and one diagonal line on each, hook and part of wings filled with iron corrosion from (missing) pin. Length 35mm, width 16mm. 1st century AD.

Pilgrim badge. Poorly cast copper alloy depicting the Virgin and Child within the horns of a crescent. The Virgin is shown from the waist up, her head surrounded by a glory, her right hand is raised in blessing, her hair falls over her left shoulder and she is possibly holding a sceptre. An integral shank on the reverse has been bent over to form a loop. Measuring 25 x 23mm. Cf. Spencer, 1990, 74, fig. 46. 15th - early 16th century.

Late medieval or early post-medieval copper alloy locking arm buckle. Rectangular frame with rectangular-sectioned sides drilled for separate spindle and (broken) locking arm. Cast pin with transverse pierced oval-sectioned lug to attach to bar. The outside edge of the larger loop has a transverse flange, the upper edges of the frame concave with a notch at either end.
Measuring 29 x 17mm (excluding arm). Width 32 including arm.
See similar examples in Whitehead (2003, 89, no.552 - 4). This type of buckle is now thought to date from c. 1500 AD.

Summary: Bronze Age hoard consisting of 191 objects including wood and cloth. The finds were found with a metal detector in the ploughsoil over an area at least 30ft. across, and the site was subsequently excavated by Andrew Rogerson. The site was ridged for asparagus immediately prior to the first discovery.
During excavation, the surface was removed to reveal an almost square pit (300 x 300mm) cut into natural orange clay to a depth of 90mm. The very clearly defined edges of the cut indicate that the pit was not left open for a great length of time. The upper surface was ba…

Post-medieval crotal bell. Rectangular loop with cast hole, two large holes in the upper half, prominant, narrow median rib, round-ended slot in base, corroded iron pea. Very worn cast decoration is visible on the lower half only in the form of a sunburst or gadrooning, with initials (H and a possible I) within a semicircular field to one side of the slot.

Post-medieval furniture fitting. An incomplete cast copper alloy drop handle with a trapezoidal suspension / attachment loop, with short spiked projections to either side above a constriction before expanding to a rectangular plate which is decorated with a slightly raised triangular panel. The plate terminates in an irregular transverse break. Surviving length 36mm. Width 16mm. For similar examples see Read (1995, 162, no.1086) and Macquoid and Edwards (1954, vol.II, 303, fig.16a), c. 1660 - 1710.
