Silver grosso of Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia), Rome, 1492-1503, adapted by the cutting out of a disc from the centre of the coin. The reason for this is uncertain; annular brooches are known which have been similarly treated but they are generally over two centuries earlier in date and have a hole drilled in the perimeter to accommodate a pin. The fashion for making annular brooches out of coins seems to have died out long before the last decade of the 15th century when this grosso was struck. It is probable that another function was intended for this large silver washer but wha…

Silver gros tournois of Loius IX of France, issued 1266-70, gilded on the obverse and with the remains of clasp fittings attached to the reverse. This transforming of a coin to a brooch (or clasp) was a common phenomenon in the late 13th century and a number of similar examples are known including several from Norfolk (Marsden 2014, 90-2). The adaption also means that the coin is treated as an object and, being a precious metal artefact of more than 300 years age, is thus a case of Treasure. Diameter 26mm. Weight 4.38g. The ring is undecorated, without marks and not neatly finished and is therefore unlikely to have been a finger ring. It is very similar to many recorded examples of 14th - 16th century copper alloy rings possibly used to hang drapes (Egan, 1998, 62 - 4), or possible simple brooches or buckles. However, the degree of wear and lack of diagnostic features makes close dating impossible, although it is likely to be ancient and over 300 years old.
