Medieval copper alloy buckle. Rectangular plate, folded widthways, recessed for frame, slot for pin. A fragment of the pin and bar survive, the rest of the frame is missing. Three rivets, one behind the slot and two (one now missing) at the attachment edge. The back-plate is narrower than the front-plate and broken transversely. The front-plate is decorated with an engraved line following the edge and very slight traces of gilding visible through heavy corrosion. Length 36mm. Width 12.5mm. Circa 13th - 14th century. Early Saxon silver, gilded buckle pin. D-sectioned pin, recessed on the underside for the (missing) frame, the broken loop emerging from the mouth of a stylised animal head with small round ears, shallow brow ridge, dots for eyes and a slightly up-turned snout. The loop is rectangular-sectioned, curved internally, and flattened on the base externally before the break. Only the animal head has been gilded. Length 23mm. Thickness 4mm. Weight 3.1g. No very close parallel has been found. Circa 550 - 700 (Andrew Rogerson pers. com.).

Medieval copper alloy buckle with integral plate. Flat-sectioned, broken across a loop at either end, with a narrow bar between, which is expanded immediately behind the smaller loop for an empty piercing for a rivet or the (missing) pin. Surviving length 25mm. Maximum surviving width 11mm. Width of bar 4mm. See Whitehead (2003, 33, no.190, 34, no.201 and 35, nos.207 - 8) for potentially similar buckles. The small size of this example makes it rather fragile, and it could only have been used for a very narrow strap with didn't take much weight.

The outside edge is formed from three lobes each decorated with two angled transverse ribs forming a chevron. Externally the lobes are slight, internally the edge is scalloped with four concave foils. Measuring 20 x 34mm. Broadly similar in style to double-looped frames in Egan and Pritchard (2002, 84, fig.51, no.345 and an example illustrated from the Museum of London collection), although this is certainly a single-looped example. Probably 14th - 15th century.

Medieval copper alloy buckle. Frame oval internally with trapezoidal outside edge, off-set, narrowed bar, sheet pin. The outside edge of the frame is extended to form an elongated notch with small rounded knops to either side of the blunt terminal, with a bordering line of finely executed interrupted rocker-arm engraving giving the appearance of tiny addorsed dots around the edge of each half of the frame and at least one end of the bar. Medieval copper alloy buckle plate. Short, rectangular plate, recessed for the (missing) frame, slot for (missing) pin, folded widthways, the back-plate narrower than the front-plate, with two globular-headed rivets securing front-plate, back-plate and (missing) strap. The front-plate is gilded and engraved with an outer border of rocker-arm and an inner single line. One corner of the front and back-plates is missing. Measuring 14 x (reconstructed) 27mm. Circa late 12th - 14th century.

Medieval copper alloy buckle. Oval frame, off-set narrowed bar, flat-sectioned outside edge decorated with two pairs of opposed spirals or scrolls. Rectangular plate folded widthways, recessed for the frame, slot for the sheet pin, the back-plate smaller than the front-plate with two rivets at the attachment edge. The plate is decorated with a lion passant guardant in low relief on a stippled ground. The surface is very corroded but gilding survives on the frame and plate. Late 12th - 13th century. Frame measuring 13 x 17mm. Plate 20 x 13mm. Combined length 30mm.
