Rectangular plate, tapering slightly towards theworn and probably broken attachment edge, broken at the transverse fold, back-plate missing, slot for pin, two rivet holes behind slot, one central rivet hole, the attachment edge possibly broken across two more. Single line engraved border and tiny trace of gilding. Frame and pin missing. Measuring 31 x 15mm. Late 12th - 14th century.

Medieval copper alloy scabbard chape. Bi-concave upper edge on the front and back face, the resulting exaggerated central projection broken. Tapering to a blunt terminal, with a shallow transverse rib on one face and a transverse groove across the base. Both faces are decorated with ring-and-dot, five on one face and six on the other. The chape is filled with corroded iron which has forced a split in the side. Surviving length 33mm. Width 20mm.
Similar to 12th century examples in de Reuck (1991, 3, 6 and 9).

Notch for pin on outside edge, bar widening towards the centre before recess for the sheet pin. Measuring 30 x 34.5mm. External width of rectangular loop 21mm, internal width 16mm. See an example from a 1400 - 1450 context in Egan and Pritchard (2002, 103, fig.65, no.472).

See examples from circa 1270 - 1400 contexts (Egan and Pritchard, 2002, 88, fig.54, nos.380 and 386) and examples dated circa 1500 - 1650 (Whitehead, 2003, 54, nos.303, 307 and 312). Probably 13th - 15th century.

D-sectioned, with a transverse rib at each end of the head- and foot-plates, at either end of the bow and at the apex of the bow, the sides of each resulting section slightly convex. Fragment of side lobe from an Early Saxon great square headed brooch. Very little original edge surviving, inner panel decorated with engraved lines and ring-and-dot with one ring-and-dot decorated lobe projecting from the edge. The plain side lobe is separated from the engraved inner panel by a curved line. Gilding survives in the engraved lines. Hines (1997) Group XVI or XVII. Circa 525 - 575.
