Roman copper alloy furniture fitting, perhaps a casket or box mount. Hollow backed, circular stud with the lion's face in high relief, with grooves defining the mouth and snout, and details of the eyes. The outer flange is engraved with radiating lines representing the mane around rounded ears. The reverse of the mount is filled with white metal and a central corroded iron shank. Diameter 25mm. Height 13mm. For similar examples see NMS-DB80B4, and an example from Skeleton Green, Hertfordshire (Partridge, 1981, 314, fig.119a). Circa 43 - 150 AD.

Cast in low relief in the form of a stylised cherub's face with trefoil sprigs of probable foliage above and below, the larger upper sprigs framing the base of the circular eye, the lower smaller sprigs framing a an attachment loop to either side of the cherub.
