Object type: HOARD
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
The hoard has been fully published (Behr and Pestell 2014) and a summary can be found at https://www.bl.uk/collection-items/the-binham-hoard Silver sheet, probably an equal-armed brooch or perhaps a mount. The curved bow is flat-backed with raised edges on the front face and otherwise plain, straight sided except at either end where it flares sharply before originally wide triangular terminals at either end, three corners of which are missing, the fourth detached and held in place by a small piece of clear plastic tape. There are stamps consisting of two concentric rings arou…

Object type: COIN HOARD
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
2 medieval silver coins found within two feet of each other. Both are groats of similar date in very good condition, and it seems likely that they went into the ground together. They are: Edward IV, London, cinquefoil initial mark with rose on breast, Type XXI, North 1631, weight 3.13g, 1480-3 Henry VII, London, crosslet initial mark, North 1747, weight 3.07g, 1504-7 The later groat has hardly seen any circulation and so it seems likely that the hoard was lost or deposited late in the first decade of the 16th century or early in the second.

Three coins found reasonably close together, a halfcrown of Charles I and two shillings. The halfcrown in particular is not a denomination that is often found as a single find and there is little doubt that these three coins represent part of a scattered hoard. They have probably seen a little too much circulation to date this hoard to the Civil War of the 1640s - loss or deposition probably occurred in the 1650s or 1660s. Catalogue 1) Charles I halfcrown, eye initial mark, North 2213, weight 14.68, 1645 2) Charles I shilling, crown initial mark, North 2225, weight 5.91g, 163…

Due to its fragmentary nature it is difficult to conclusively identify this object. It is most likely a late medieval dress accessory. It is made from silver, and takes the form of a scallop shell with seven foils divided by six radiating engraved lines and two transverse curved lines on the upper, convex face. The reverse is concave with a few possible spots of solder, broken across the hinge end of the shell. Apart from the possible solder, there is no visible means of attachment. For comparisons please see: BERK-FC52B0 and FAKL-BCA6A8 Probably 14th - 15th century. Length 2…

An incomplete Beaker period barbed and tanged arrowhead of semi-translucent fine quality flint with no rough inclusions, now patinated an attractive orange colour. The piece is missing both barbs and the tip with some minor damage to both lateral edges. All breaks appear to be ancient. This is unfortunate as the shape of the barbs are the defining characteristic for Green's typology (1980). Both faces are competently pressure flaked with overlapping flake scars. Although fragmentary it is likely to belong to Conygar Hill, Sutton, or Green Low types of arrowhead. 2300-1700 BC. Measu…

Medieval copper alloy gilt strap-end from scabbard belt or book clasp, of characteristic 14th-century design, of box-like construction. The part that contained the strap is rectangular with separate side strips before a box-like circular boss and broken transversely pierced terminal. On the reverse of the circular boss is a highly corroded protrusion. Tiny traces of gilding are visible, but the any detail is obscured by a layer of corrosion and dirt. These strap-ends are interpreted by Fingerlin (1971), p.111, nos.174-8) as scabbard belt-mounts, but have also been identified at book c…
