Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Late palaeolithic double-ended scraper. Segment of a large blade with a single crest in a chocolate brown stained flint. Both ends appear to have been steeply retouched to give a double ended scraper but both have suffered ancient damage. The distal edge has small neat retouch scars at both ends but the central part of the edge has two larger scars with evidence of crushing on the ventral side. The proximal end appears to have been damaged by the loss of a large chip and shows slight evidence of crushing on the ventral edge. The find spot is near one of the head ways of the River Wens…

Neolithic flint pick. Dimensions 416 x 66 x 49mm. Brown staining over dark grey / black flint. Rhombic section with sharp ridge on one face, largely formed by a natural cleavage plane (ancient frost fracture), the other face flaked entirely with a more rounded medial ridge. The dark brown patination suggests a probable peaty deposition, there is a trace of concretion on one face, most likely an accumulation of iron oxides and grit. All flake scars appear to be fairly hard hammer struck with some removals exhibiting a deep negative bulbs of percussion. At one end an impact ha…

Incomplete Early Bronze Age (Beaker period) flint dagger. Tip missing, some minor damage to edges, possible opposed single notches 2/3rds along length from tip. Butt damaged by a transverse bending fracture. Soft hammer struck and pressure flaked around edges. Light grey flint with some spotty iron staining. 2300 - 1700 BC. A more complete but un-notched example was found at Feltwell, Norfolk in 1962 (HER 5163). Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Palaeolithic flint handaxe. Measuring 210 x 115 x 37mm. This is a very large handaxe, probably one of the largest ever recorded from Norfolk. Although long and wide, the handaxe is relatively slim and has a profile that suggests that it may have been made on an enormous primary flake, or more likely a large, flat nodule of flint. It is finished by large invasive flake removals around the whole perimeter except at the point, where the flake scars are relatively small. Heavily patinated, weathered cortex remains to one face where the flake scars failed to overlap, a couple of …

Broad period: BRONZE AGE

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete Beaker period barbed and tanged arrowhead of semi-translucent fine quality flint with no rough inclusions, now patinated an attractive orange colour. The piece is missing both barbs and the tip with some minor damage to both lateral edges. All breaks appear to be ancient. This is unfortunate as the shape of the barbs are the defining characteristic for Green's typology (1980). Both faces are competently pressure flaked with overlapping flake scars. Although fragmentary it is likely to belong to Conygar Hill, Sutton, or Green Low types of arrowhead. 2300-1700 BC. Measu…

Lower Palaeolithic pointed ovate handaxe of Wymer's type E, unifacially and invasively knapped from a thermal or "potlid" fractured piece of white patinated flint, the dorsal (worked) face is patinated with a white "basket weave" with the original brown flint colour showing in-between, there is a small patch of worn and orange stained cortex where the flakes did not overlap towards the middle of this face. This type of handaxe are quickly made from any available small piece of flint and the knapping is focused usually to produce one sharp cutting edge over any attempt at symmetry, tho…

Neolithic flint axe, found around 1952 - 56, of elongated, narrow-butted form, and of lenticular section with straight lateral edges tapering immediately from the cutting edge, all of the larger knapping scars are completely ground and polished out over the whole surface, with particularly fine polishing around the gently curved cutting edge. It is of patinated pale mottled grey flint, with some rusty scrapes from iron agricultural implements. Maximum width (at cutting edge) 48mm. Maximum thickness 16mm. Length 203mm. Polished Axe, dimensions: 169 x 61 x 34mm. Highly ground and polished all over, with only a few faint flake scars visible at the lateral edges and rounded butt: the sides are ground round rather than flat. The curved cutting edge is sharp with only one ancient chip, while a recent small chip reveals pale grey flint. The axe is patinated light brown with some buff areas. Found in the 1960's and subsequently used as a paperweight. Neolithic (4,000 to 2,350BC)

Neolithic polished flint axehead. Lenticular in section, polished overall but with a few flake scars still visible. Cutting edge curved and sharp, sides tapering towards narrow, straight butt. There is relatively fresh damage in the form of a large natural flake at the cutting edge on one face, and a small flake at the butt end revealing pale yellow-brown flint. The surface of the flint is patinated pale grey with few iron stains. Length 203mm, width 76mm, thickness 55mm. Weight 968g. Similar to NHER 56013 and also PAS (NMS-4C43C4). 3000-2351 BC.

Polished axe in dark grey mottled glossy flint with negligible patination. Polished extensively on one face from the broad blade up the central area to the square butt and with one lateral edge rounded slightly along its whole length, the other only toward the butt. The opposed face is only polished at the extreme edge of the cutting edge and is otherwise neatly finished by shallow re-touch flaking. The elegant shape suggests that this is a flint copy of an Early Bronze Age flat axe, and the shallow invasive flaking is also typical of this transitional period. Almost certainly Late Ne…

'Handaxe' Dimensions 102 x 62 x 56mm. In blackish flint and of roughly plano-convex section, this biface can be considered as having a rounded butt end and an opposed pointed end, It has a small area of thin weathered cortex on the narrow crest but is otherwise flaked overall. With the pointed end away from the observer, the right side face is formed by two large flake removals and two smaller, the left face by one large removal and several smaller ones. The 'base' has a number of smaller removals and a line of battering along its length The condition is rolled except for the po…

Lower Palaeolithic handaxe of type D (Wymer 1968, 1999.) Hard hammer struck from a suitable flat and slightly irregular nodule of mottled grey and black flint, now unpatinated; both faces have a patch of cortex extant, one appearing as a hollow where the flake removals did not succeed in being deep enough to level the concavity. All the edges and high points of the flake scars are heavily rolled. 143.5 x 80 x 37 mm. Weight: 432g. Found on beach. Recorded and sketched by the late Tony Gregory in 1975.

Neolithic to Early Bronze Age fabricator made from a found hard hammer struck white and light grey patinated tertiary piece of debitage, this was reworked with steep retouch mostly to the dorsal face at a later date. These flake removals show the original unpatinated dark grey flint. Fabricators are thought to be part of a fire lighting kit; the flint being struck with a piece of Marcasite to produce sparks. 78 x 29 x 14 mm.
