A medieval finger-ring set with a sapphire. It has suffered considerable damage, the hoop now distended. The form is a decorated stirrup shape, with two four-petaled flowers forming the shoulders and two others symmetrically decorating the hoop.
The damage to the ring has removed much of the inscription, which would have covered the external face of the hoop. The traces of some letters can be discerned. They read as follows:
......V... R(?)DEFIN
The "N" is reversed.
The original meaning of the inscription cannot be established.

A piece of gold wire made from four strands twisted.
The wire was made from 4 smaller wires (diameter c. 2.4 mm) twisted together in a clockwise spiral giving an overall diameter for the twisted wire of 5 mm. The wire piece weighs 7.24g and is 20mm long (unstraightened). The fragment appears to have been cut from a larger piece of wire at one end, although the other end appears to be a break. Analysis shows these wires are made of over 80% gold.

These rings were distributed by people joining the Order of Serjeants-at-Law. Rings distributed at the same call all had the same motto whether an individual or several people were joining the order. The motto 'LEX VITA REGVM' was used on rings of the general call of April 1567 when seven people became Serjeants-at-Law. However, the list of mottos and the years in which they were used is incomplete and it is possible that this motto was used more than once (G. Holborn, p…

The style of the lettering is consistent for the 17th century. The British Mus…

A gold posy ring, D-shaped in section. Inscribed internally 'Loue i,s' the bond of peace' with a stamped, worn makers mark consisting of HB (ligatured) stamped in relief within a square. A gold solidus of the emperor Theodosius I struck at Milan between 378 and 387 (Roman Imperial Coinage vol. IX, no. 5f or 8b). The coin has been fitted with a ribbed suspension loop, also of gold, at the 12 o'clock position on the obverse (6 o'clock on the reverse) in order for it to serve as a pendant. This process is well known from the early Saxon period when many Roman gold coins were thus treated.

Gold finger-ring with circular collet, in the form of a quatrefoil, set with a turquoise cabochon. The narrow hoop of flattened D-section is decorated at the shoulders with foliar motifs and with inlaid dark blue enamel at the terminals. The collet can be compared with that of a ring from Newball, Lincolnshire, which was dated to the late 15th or early 16th century. (Treasure Annual Report 2003, 108, no. 194). It is also similar to a ring shown on the left hand of Thomas Cromwell in a portrait painted by Holbein in 1534-5 (Oman 1974, 96, plate 23 A). Late 15th - early 16th century. In…

A tremissis or pseudo-tremissis of the 7th century, which has been pierced and gilded for use as a pendant. The tremissis is a coin type widely issued by the Merovingian Franks in this period, but also produced by the Anglo-Saxons and Frisians. Such coins were produced in fairly good gold at the beginning of the century, but with the gold contained declining as the century progressed, with the gold increasingly replaced by silver. The design on this example is relatively crude, and could represent either a Merovingian coin or an imitation produced elsewhere. Its gold content is c. 41-4…
