Description: Undated gold finger ring. Sheet band with median repoussé rib. There are at least two transverse creases which may indicate a join but the ring is slightly distorted, making this uncertain. Dimensions: External diameter 20mm. Width of band 7.5mm. Weight 2.29g. Discussion: Images of the ring have been seen by British Museum curators including Gillian Varndell, Neil Wilkin, Richard Hobbs and Barry Ager, and they have concluded that it cannot securely be dated to any particular period. It must therefore remain undated, and so does not fall under the provisions of …

County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Silver ring with an irregular faceted and worn section. External diameter 24 - 25mm. Internal diameter 18 - 19mm. Thickness 3 - 4mm. Weight 4.2g. The ring is undecorated, without marks and not neatly finished and is therefore unlikely to have been a finger ring. It is very similar to many recorded examples of 14th - 16th century copper alloy rings possibly used to hang drapes (Egan, 1998, 62 - 4), or possible simple brooches or buckles. However, the degree of wear and lack of diagnostic features makes close dating impossible, although it is likely to be ancient and over 300 years old.
