Roman copper alloy bow brooch. Extremely worn and corroded fragment of sprung brooch consisting of one short, pointed wing concave of the reverse and the upper part of the D-sectioned bow. Spring, pin, one wing and lower part of bow missing. Width (reconstructed) at least 26mm. 1st century AD.

Roman copper alloy furniture fitting or possibly a lock pin. A corroded and broken rectangular-sectioned shank with a circular-sectioned terminal consisting of a double-moulded collar, before tapering towards a collared, rounded knop at the apex. Total surviving length 41mm. Terminal length 22mm, diameter 9mm. Shank at most complete point 5 x 8mm. Probably the arched bow-section of a Roman crossbow brooch. Consisting of a triangular-sectioned curved copper alloy bar with the flat edge on the outside of the curve and the inner edge slightly rounded. There are ancient transverse breaks at both ends, one of which narrows from the outer face in a sharp curve before the break. Surviving length 48mm. Thickness 7mm. Width of bar 12.5mm. 3rd-4th century AD.

Four base silver radiates fused together in a pile. Given this feature they clearly entered the ground in a similar position and, since they are of base silver, they furnish a case of Treasure. The only legible portions are provided by the face visible at each end of the pile, an obverse of Postumus from his Principal Mint and another of Gallienus from the Gallic Mint operating in the late 250s (with a GALLIENVS.P.F.AVG legend, radiate and cuirassed bust right). Roman copper alloy sprung dolphin brooch. C-sectioned wings with concave mouldings and damaged ends, triangular-sectioned bow with slightly concave sides and a median longitudinal groove. Only the stub of the catch-plate survives. The reverse of the wings are partially filled with corroded iron, with iron corrosion cover parts of the surface on the front and back of the wings and bow and on either side of the catch-plate. The surface is corroded and pitted. Pin missing. Surviving length 40mm. Surviving width 23mm.

Unidentified object. Copper alloy flat disc stamped on one face with 12 triangles in a circle, points facing inwards, around a very slightly raised circular moulding around a central rectangular hole. Plain on the reverse. There is a very small amount of possible decayed enamel on one triangle. The edges of the disc are certainly complete around most of the circumference but there are abraded patches which may be breaks. Diameter 20mm. Thickness 1.5mm. Weight 2.76g. Roman silver finger ring. D-sectioned band with slight internal median arris, widening and thickening smoothly from the rear of the hoop to the front. There is a narrow moulding at either edge of the band on slightly less than half of the upper face of the ring either side of the otherwise undefined shoulders and bezel. External diameter 16mm. Internal diameter 11.5mm. Maximum width 5mm. Maximum thickness 3mm. Weight 1.9g. The simplicity of the ring makes close dating difficult.

Fragment of P-shaped or crossbow brooch. Broken at both ends. Lower bow of flat 'D' section ending with a single engraved transverse line above a pair of side notches, the footplate decorated with a pair of side notches, transverse line and another pair of side notches at the break. The catchplate does not survive. It is evidenced by a small broken backwards projection on the footplate, below which all of that side of the plate is missing. A rather flimsy example. Length 19mm, width 4mm. Weight 0.62g. 3rd - 4th century.

Incomplete silver finger ring. Most of D-sectioned (3 x 1mm), parallel-sided hoop is missing. The circular bezel (diameter 6.5mm) is cast integrally with, but is set on the outer surface of, the hoop. Its surface is flat and undecorated apart from a number of randomly distributed pecked impressions. On both sides of the bezel the hoop is decorated with three moulded grooves (3mm in length). Internal diameter c. 20mm, weighing 1.3g. This ring was reported as possible treasure under the Treasure Act 1996 and subsquently returned to the finder after being disclaimed as treasure.

Copper alloy prick spur with a high tin content and tin enriched surface giving silvered appearance. It is a 'rivet-spur' type with a heel-plate containing the corroded remains of iron goad. Head of silver crossbow brooch with stub of narrow trapezoidal section bow. The side knobs are pinecone shaped, the upper knob more globular below an elongated finial, and there is a pair of rib mouldings before each knob. The cross arm is of hexagonal section. Iron axis bar. Keller Type 1 and Pröttel Type 1 (Swift 2000, 14). Date: Late 3rd - early 4th century. Dimensions: Width at cross arm 47mm. Weight 20.31g. The age and precious metal content of this item therefore qualify it as treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
