Fragment of gold sheet from an unidentified object. The sheet is folded forming a front and back-plate the edges of which are torn, except for the lower edge of the back-plate which appears neatly cut, and the straight folded edge. The front-plate is decorated with a row of stamped dots above a row of repouss√© pellets parallel with the folded edge, the lower edge possibly torn along a third row of pellets or dots. Surviving dimensions 12 x 7mm. Weight 0.4g. Although ancient (over 300 years old) the decoration would be consistent with a Bronze Age, Roman or Early Medieval date, and…

A single Roman gold coin, a solidus of Arcadius, found in exactly the same area as a hoard of 26 late Roman gold solidi and 4 silver siliquae discovered in 1993. This coin is plainly part of the same hoard, missed during the 1993 excavations. It was struck in 394-5, a date that exactly accords with the latest coins in the hoard and its crisp, almost mint state, similar to that of the other coins of this date present, suggests that it had not been in circulation long when the hoard was buried. Arcadius, solidus, mint of Milan, Roman Imperial Coinage volume IX, 35b (September 6, 394 t…

A gold solidus of the emperor Theodosius I struck at Milan between 378 and 387 (Roman Imperial Coinage vol. IX, no. 5f or 8b).
