Silver cuff link. A pair of octagonal plates, each with a loop brazed to its back - as suggested by green corrosion around each loop - and joined to each other by a single long oval silver link. Each plate bears a stamped motif of a four petalled flower with a diamond or lozenge between each pair of petals, the negative impressions of these devices being visible on the back of each plate. The petals are filled with finely spaced longitudinally incised lines while the area where they meet is cross hatched, and each diamond has a tiny stamped lozenge within its outline. Each edge of the…

Silver cufflink fragment, as kindly identified by the finder. Composite object comprising a concavo-convex discoid back plate with a stamped openwork disc bearing a radial pattern of billeted petals or fronds attached, probably by a central domed rivet. A drawn wire loop soldered to the back retains a longer oval loop; the second plate is lost. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1750-1850.

Silver cuff-link fragment. Cast cufflink comprising part of a smaller plate [of diameter 13mm] with a moulded design, possibly depicting two hands clasped, a flaming heart, or a combination of these motifs; and with an integral stalk connecting the display side to a plain back plate. Those cuff-links considered to celebrate the marriage of Charles II and Catherine of Braganza usually take the form of separate front plate and back plate connected by a pair of chain links, so this is probably a later derivative form. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1750.

Silver cuff link fragment. Cast discoid plate with bevelled rim defining its hollow back. The front bears the bordered motif of two hearts below a wide open crown against a pelleted field. The motif is conventionally thought to refer to the marriage of Charles II and Catherine of Braganza in 1662, though it undoubtedly persisted thereafter as symbolising either romantic or royalist sentiment. The back is perhaps filled with a grey fixative; a counterpart plate and the link between the plates are lost. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1662-1700. In view of its date and material, this ob…

Silver cufflink fragment. Circular front plate with bevelled edge, hollow behind and retaining buff fixative. The display face bears the motif of two hearts below an open crown, against a stippled ground. The motif is conventionally associated with celebration of the marriage of Charles II to Catherine of Braganza in 1661, though the motif continued to represent romantic affection or marriage thereafter. An identical object was reported from nearby, and the finder credibly suggests this may represent the loss or discard of a matching pair. In view of its likely age and material this o…

Silver
Cufflink or Button front. Cast concavo-convex lentoid stud with a pair of scars from attachment to a loop or chain (now lost) on the back. A hand drawn incised design on the front comprises a looped strap with buckle pin holes along it, fastened by a large oval buckle. Shading is added by vertical and diagonal strokes, as is a border of angled sprays. This object is decorated, in a craft tradition rather than an industrial setting. Suggested date: Post-Medieval to Modern, 1750-1850.

Silver cuff link fragment. A flat discoid plate standing proud of a plain rim, with a stamped motif comprising a pair of hearts below an arched crown with joining hands between crown and hearts, the hands projecting from ill-defined marginal features representing their owners. A central scar on the reverse shows the former position of an element connecting this plate with a counterpart. This is a variation upon a romantic theme traditionally associated with loyal celebration of the marriage of Charles II and Catherine of Braganza in 1661. The motif remained popular at least until the …

Silver possible cuff link fragment. A die-stamped disc with a sharply indented centre of diameter 5mm whose frayed edges now partly block the aperture. Silver cuff link fragment. Cast oval lightly concavo-convex plate with paired scars on the back where a link to a counterpart has been lost. The display side bears the incised image of a bird sat amongst delicate fronds, with finely lined textures at one side. A maker's back stamp reads B.B, while two hallmarks on oval panels [Queen's head left and the seriffed letter ?I in an ornate ?Gothic script] may suggest a Victorian (1837-1901) date, possibly 1890 if of the Edinburgh assay office. Silver cuff link fragment. One half of a pair of linked discs, with a flat front and bevelled rim, hollow behind and retaining off-white fixative for a chain [now lost] between the two discs. The front bears the romantic motif of paired hearts below a tall wide open crown. This motif is associated with the marriage of Charles II (1660-1685) to Catherine of Braganza, though it may well have remained in currency after the displacement of the House of Stuart. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1660-1700. In view of its age and probable material, this object is to be subjected to the Treasure…

Silver cuff link, as kindly identified by the finder. Discoid sheet metal plate with rim; a silver loop is soldered to the back. The front bears a central vegetal motif with radially spiralling leaves within a central sunken panel framed by a series of tiny juxtaposed triangular stamps. A further linear border divides the surrounding plain field from an outer zone of juxtaposed pellets, again within a sunken gutter. Crumpled at opposite sides. Silver and glass probable cuff link fragment. Pressed metal disc with an upstanding rim which retains a deposit of granular off-white material, presumably fixative, or possibly a smore similar material to the stone itself. A separate bead of facetted form and diameter 6.4mm may be a degraded glass paste stone, and was presented along with its putative setting. A slot in the back of the disc is presumably for a link [now lost] connecting this object with its counterpart. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800.
