Silver and copper alloy thimble. Sheet metal thimble, probably made by hammering over a former, of conical form with a copper alloy top soldered onto the top. Decoration of the lower half of the wall comprises a series of leaves framed by and springing from tendrils of zig zag rockered work, all within paired band borders of finely punched or rouletted dots. The veins of the leaves are rendered by hand-punched slashes, with supplementary shading of finely spaced diagonal lines of smaller dots. The series is interrupted by a framed initial letter hand-inscribed in flowing calligraphic …

Silver and copper alloy thimble. A conical domed thimble with silver (or silver-plated, as kindly suggested by the finder nd perhaps confirmed by magnified viewing) walls and a separate copper alloy top. The wall has a foot ring comprising paired incised lines with a gutter between them, which is repeated half way up the wall with the intervening zone left empty. Above this, finely machine stamped hexagonal pits appear as if rising in rows from left to right. Two horizontal rows of pits are carried over from the silver wall to the copper alloy cap of the thimble which - now - is other…

Silver thimble fragment. Part of the wall of a thimble made from sheet metal with a plain basal zone, above which the lower part of its wall is occupied by a series of vegetal curlicues and loops against a stippled ground, all framed by linear borders. Silver spoon. Cast spoon fragment, comprising a leaf shaped bowl with a short oval rib below the bowl which continues as a flat and narrow stem. The spoon bowl has been hammered flat, and most of the stem has been removed by forceful twisting which has left a thin tapered and twisted stub attached to the bowl. The material is now very thin, and this may be the result of wear in use rather than the hammering of the object, as silver spoons can acquire sharp edges with prolonged use. Pewter spoons from London generally exhibit broader bowls, so this example is probably later. Suggested …

Oval spoon bowl, lightly concavo-convex and constructed of two layers of stamped silver sheet metal, now parting from each other, tapered at its upper edge to continue as a stem of width 3mm [lost]. The convex side bears a central longitudinal bar with a short cross bar at either end. The concave side also has a central ridge, possibly branched at one end, and bears lettering in modern style stamped on the central ridge reading: SILVER. Probably from a cruet or condiment service; the thickness of the silver sheet is typical of 19th-century silver scrap which fou…

Silver spoon fragment. Rounded flat spatulate end of a plain teaspoon stem, broken close to its junction with the bowl, which is lost. A narrow oval panel, perhaps a maker’s mark, appears at the end of a moulded longitudinal gutter with traces of a zig-zag pattern down the middle on the back of the stem. Now sharply bent. This appears to be a further example of the casual disposal of broken silver objects without apparent regard for the intrinsic value of their material, which seems a particular trait of 19th-century deposition. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1775-1875 Length (…

Silver spoon. A cast teaspoon with a rounded and slightly turned up end to its terminal, a narrow stem [bent] and an oval bowl, now flattened. Hallmarks appear on the underside of the handle as follow: leopard within a rectangular panel with cut corners; a letter M in antique style in a similar panel; a king's profile right; and a smaller symbol resembling a tiny key in its own panel, probably a maker's mark rather than from the assay office. This may indicate Newcastle 1802 though the series of marks appears incomplete. Between the last stamp and the end of the handle the letters A S…

Silver spoon fragment. Cast elongated oval concavo-convex bowl with a U-shaped flat extension to its stem reinforcing the meeting of stem and bowl. The stem is widened next to the bowl, narrowing to a lentoid section beyond the spurs of this part; the terminal is lost and the stem looped back on itself. This is a further example of silver objects discarded in the later post-medieval period without apparent regard for the intrinsic value of their material. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800 Length (as found): 63.4mm, Width: 24.8mm, Thickness (lower stem): 1.7mm, Weight: 10.92gms

Silver spoon. A cast teaspoon with spatulate down-turned terminal to a tapered handle with a thin rib extending below its leaf-shaped bowl. Initials appear inscribed on the upper side of the terminal handle: B / H W. On the reverse, three stamped motifs in panels are probably hallmarks: a lion walking left; the letter B; and an indeterminate motif in a kidney-shaped panel, possibly a bust. This may indicate assay at London in 1817. Another example of the disposal of silver objects without apparent regard for the intrinsic value of the material. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, probably …

Silver spoon fragment. Leaf-shaped bowl from a teaspoon, now flattened and crumpled, torn where it has been detached from the stem. Silver spoon. A cast silver teaspoon with a thin stem expanding towards a rounded end topped with a half-oval and ending with a flat sub-rectangular terminal at right angles to the stem. The stem continues as a flat sub-triangular rib below the proximal end of an oval bowl. Hallmarks appear in three panels: from left to right they are a lower case seriffed letter U in a square frame; a facing leopard's head in a heater-shield-shaped panel; and a lion walking left in a rectangular panel with two indentations in its upper and lower edges. After the hallmarks is a further panel with make…
