Silver brooch fragments. Two joining cast fragments of a brooch with interlace ornament on its display side and relict pin gear on an otherwise plain reverse; the source record suggests gilding and niello to be present on the display face and identifies this as of Terslev Style (Kershaw 2010 no. 32). The suggested material and age of the object may require its submission to the Treasure process, ref. TBC. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 900-1000 Length: 27mm, Width: 24mm, Thickness: 6.4mm, Weight: 4.93gms

Silver annular brooch, as kindly identified by the finder. Cast band in the form of a heart with rounded facets alternately angled inwards and outwards. A row of pellets follows the meandering aris between the inward and outward-angled facets. One inner facet serves as a rest for a separate cast pin with doubled ridges and a V-shaped ridge at its inner end, which is set in a constriction in the band. The finder notes that the metal has been tested by a hand-held device and was found to be silver gilt. Medieval annular brooches are usually dated to 1200-1350, but the use of silver gilt …

Cast gilded silver miniature square-headed brooch. The head bears a central motif of three nested rectangles enclosing a horizontal rib, with an outer border of closely juxtaposed stamped circles of diameter 1mm. A curved bow springs from the innermost of the nested rectangles, and has a central longitudinal rib flanked by paired grooves. A U-shaped lug on the back retains the corroded stub of an iron pin. The central rib continues to form the longer shaft of a voided cross potent set centrally in a rectilinear mid-bow expansion with its outer angles curved. There are three small curv…

Fragment of an early medieval silver strip brooch. The brooch comprises a broad, sub-triangular plate of silver sheet, tapering towards one end which terminates in a small, backward-pointing loop representing the remains of the pin mechanism; the other end is lost to a jagged break. The upper surface is decorated with a lightly incised design that cannot now be deciphered fully, perhaps originally representing a zoomorphic or interlacing motif. A single incised line runs around the outer edge, forming a simple border. The back of the brooch fragment is undecorated. The piece if fairly…

Silver annular brooch fragment. Cast rectangular section band with a constriction for a pin [lost], across which the object is broken, with the loss of half its extent. The larger part of the band is decorated by a series of elongated stepped figures which overlap one another, a sharp kink in each element being emphasised by a short radial nick. These give way to doubled rows of five closely juxtaposed pellets flanked by partial rows. These features lie at a point opposite the pin seat, and may either have served as or flanked a pin rest. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1300. In view o…

Silver possible brooch fragment. Pressed metal roundel with relief decoration comprising a plain central concavo-convex boss surrounded by a series of linked triangles with a pellet at the apex of each, and with an outer pelleted border and rim. This may alternatively be from an item of pendant jewellery. The decorative features appear in reversed form on the back of the object. Slightly dented on the boss and frayed or torn around its edges. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1850-1900. Diameter: 27.8mm, Height: 6mm, Thickness (sheet): 0.4mm, Weight: 1.86gms.

Silver brooch fragment, as kindly identified by the finder. A groat, possibly of Henry VI (1422-1461, first reign) annulet coinage of 1422-1427, possibly Calais mint issue North no. 1424; with the centre cut out to produce a central circular aperture of diameter 9.3mm which would be apt to retain a stone, or to facilitate suspended wear. No pin gear appears. The flan is split at 10 O'clock obverse. In view of the demonetisation of the object it is to be submitted to the Treasure process, reference 2016 T232. Silver possible Brooch fragment. Beaten silver sheet fragment of thickness 0.3mm with a border of a finely rendered cable pattern set in a gully between ridges, and with elements of three of a series of drawn wire quatrefoils within this border. A plain segment masks the junction of two differently aligned elements of the border, suggesting that this, like the internal design, may be applied to the sheet. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900. Length: 17.2mm, Width: 6.2mm, Thickness (overall): 1.0mm, Weight: 0.37gms.

Silver and copper alloy brooch. Cast silver square section ring (1.75-2.1mm square) with fastening gear behind comprising a hinge for the pin (lost) and a wire loop opposite, with a pressed copper alloy concavo-convex badge fitted tightly into the ring. The ring has butted ends and may have been crimped about the badge, which was presumably also soldered in place. The badge motif comprises a five petalled floral boss in a wreath on the ground of a finely rayed eight pointed star, probably taken from a military cap badge. The object is a 'sweetheart' brooch incorporating part of a regi…

Description: Gilded silver knob from a radiate-headed brooch, in the shape of an animal's head, perhaps a boar. The underside is flat and hollowed, with no gilding. A flat surface at right angles to the reverse forms the back of the head, and bears a low lug at the top, 4.1mm wide by 1.5mm deep. At the base of this, a thicker (5.7mm by 3.3mm) and more ragged stub may be the remains of an iron post passing through the flat end; there is much iron staining in this area. The animal's head begins with a low ridged collar which is topped by a longitudinal groove. Beyond is a wide groo…

A Medieval brooch, miniature in dimensions, consisting of a thin lozenge-shaped frame with raised decoration on its front surface. This takes the form of pellets ranged in seven bosses at equidistant intervals. Two half-bosses are separated by a bar, which served as the pin attachment. The pin is now lost. The surface of the brooch is much abraded. The brooch is silver-gilt and dates from the late thirteenth or early fourteenth century.
