Silver coin. Worn penny of Charles I (1625-1649), with a central piercing executed from the obverse obliterating the face of the monarch. This act was clearly not intended to display the likeness of His Sacred Majesty, and its destruction may rather have been intended, perhaps as a political statement. As pierced coins of the period found their way into hoards it cannot be asserted that the piercing demonetised the coin – and indeed, any propagandist benefit would have depended on its continued circulation.

Amulet. Penny, of Charles I (1625-1649), pierced, probably at 12 O'clock obverse from the reverse, for suspension as a touch-piece.
