Silver possible thimble fragment. Cast concavo-convex heart-shaped object with a flat rimmed base which appears as a foot ring, with a tiny lug or dot on the basal rim at the cleft of the heart. It is difficult to see how this might have been securely attached to a finger-sized sleeve to function as a thimble cap, but the convex surface is entirely occupied by crowded pits of diameter 1.6mm, possibly stamped or drilled in horizontal rows. The material and possible age prompt the submission of this object to the Treasure process, ref 2023 T0025. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1700 …

Silver thimble. Pressed metal conical or domed thimble with a broad basal zone which is occupied by three linked arches and a plain zone of similar extent; the arches are defined by probably rouletted lines, with a brick-work pattern of squares below them rendered in single rouletted lines and a pattern of rhomboids above the arches defined by doubled rouletted lines. The upper part – less than half – of the wall bears round machine-stamped pits which appear as if aligned in diagonal rows. The top is now smooth though with faint traces of a radial arrangement of trapezoid compartm…

Silver thimble. Cast domed or conical thimble with a narrow plain basal zone, a band of florets or flowers framed by broad circumferential grooves above and below, and with a rectilinear grid or lattice of rectangular pits occupying the upper half of the wall. The top bears five concentric rings of rhomboid pits, these appearing as versions of those on the wall but distorted by their setting, round a central pit. Five stamped marks in the plain basal zone are: the numeral 5 in a curved shield, the letters G.H in a rectangular frame, a possible bust right in an octagonal frame, three sm…

Silver thimble. Conical or domed thimble with a thickened foot ring and a narrow plain basal zone bearing circumferential grooves. The rest of the wall is occupied by small round machine-stamped pits which appear as if ascending the wall in diagonal lines. The top bears concentric rings of similar pits. Squashed flat, with cap partly detached in the process. Post-Medieval, 1750-1850. Height: 26.2mm, Width: 24.1mm, Thickness (wall at foot ring): 0.8mm, Weight: 2.85g.

The lower wall includes a bordered plain zone bearing lettering: IN[?C] appears in a curvilinear script while other marks may include a cross and the letter H, though so crude in its angular style as to be deemed a graffito. Above this zone, the wall is occupied by stamped circular pits, interrupted by a round panel bearing the motif of a heart pierced by two arrows, points downward, with three pellets to either side, two pellets below and one above. Silver thimble. Cast cylindrical sewing ring or open-topped thimble. A repeating decorative scheme comprises four larger triangles infilled with stamped pits ascending the wall in vertical rows, linked at their tops by arcs of single pits, with a smaller triangle of stamped pits set centrally within the four fields thus defined. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1620-1700. In view of its material and suspected age, this object is to be subjected to the Treasure process, ref. 2021 T528. Silver thimble fragment. Part of the wall and top of a conical thimble with finely machine-stamped pits on its wall, and with five rings of concentric pits on top. Flattened and squashed into a lump c.3mm thick. This is another example of the prodigal distribution of silver scrap amongst rubbish of probably Victorian date, without apparent regard for the intrinsic value of the material. Silver thimble. Pressed metal conical thimble with a plain narrow foot ring and its wall above this covered by finely machine-stamped indentations. The top bears six or seven concentric rings of apparently smaller pits. Crumpled. The discarding of items or scrap of silver without apparent regard for the intrinsic value of the material appears a distinctively 19th-century, possibly Victorian, behaviour. These indicate the Birmingham Assay Office, and a probable date of either 1862 or 1912 if the letter is correctly identified. Silver and copper alloy thimble. Silver thimble fragment. Part of the wall of a thimble made from sheet metal with a plain basal zone, above which the lower part of its wall is occupied by a series of vegetal curlicues and loops against a stippled ground, all framed by linear borders. The upper part of the wall bears machine stamped circular pits of diameter 0.7mm which appear as if rising in diagonal rows from right to left. Silver thimble. Conical thimble of beaten sheet metal; the object now lacks a top though the sharp edge to what remains suggest it may have been separately made and only recently detached. A double foot ring is formed by paired and finely rouletted lines, and a further pair of similarly spaced lines appears about half way up the wall. Between these borders, fine but intermittent stamps make up a curvilinear motif, possibly a running guilloche.
