Silver possible thimble fragment. Cast concavo-convex heart-shaped object with a flat rimmed base which appears as a foot ring, with a tiny lug or dot on the basal rim at the cleft of the heart. It is difficult to see how this might have been securely attached to a finger-sized sleeve to function as a thimble cap, but the convex surface is entirely occupied by crowded pits of diameter 1.6mm, possibly stamped or drilled in horizontal rows. The material and possible age prompt the submission of this object to the Treasure process, ref 2023 T0025. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1700 …

Silver thimble. Cast domed or conical thimble with a narrow plain basal zone, a band of florets or flowers framed by broad circumferential grooves above and below, and with a rectilinear grid or lattice of rectangular pits occupying the upper half of the wall. The top bears five concentric rings of rhomboid pits, these appearing as versions of those on the wall but distorted by their setting, round a central pit. Five stamped marks in the plain basal zone are: the numeral 5 in a curved shield, the letters G.H in a rectangular frame, a possible bust right in an octagonal frame, three sm…

Silver thimble. Conical or domed thimble with a thickened foot ring and a narrow plain basal zone bearing circumferential grooves. The rest of the wall is occupied by small round machine-stamped pits which appear as if ascending the wall in diagonal lines. The top bears concentric rings of similar pits. Squashed flat, with cap partly detached in the process. Post-Medieval, 1750-1850. Height: 26.2mm, Width: 24.1mm, Thickness (wall at foot ring): 0.8mm, Weight: 2.85g.

Silver thimble. A conical or domed thimble, probably machine made, with an expanded foot ring and a narrower plain basal zone above it. The rest of the wall is occupied by probably machine stamped circular pits which appear as if ascending the wall in diagonal rows. The top bears a concentric arrangement of six rings of pits, each separated from its neighbour by a circumferential ridge, with a central group of five juxtaposed pits around a reserved pellet. The latter might relate to finishing on a lathe; there is a corresponding dimple within. The object is lightly dented, but appears…

Silver thimble. A domed or conical pressed metal thimble with a separate foot ring soldered to a plain basal zone. This also accommodates a stamped maker's mark and hallmarks in rectangular panels with cut corners as follow: J.F/lion walking left/possibly Gothic letter ?N/anchor on its side. These indicate the Birmingham Assay Office, and a probable date of either 1862 or 1912 if the letter is correctly identified. Most of the wall is occupied by finely machine stamped circular pits which appear as if ascending the wall from left to right. The top bears similar pits in concentric ri…

Silver and copper alloy thimble. A conical domed thimble with silver (or silver-plated, as kindly suggested by the finder nd perhaps confirmed by magnified viewing) walls and a separate copper alloy top. The wall has a foot ring comprising paired incised lines with a gutter between them, which is repeated half way up the wall with the intervening zone left empty. Above this, finely machine stamped hexagonal pits appear as if rising in rows from left to right. Two horizontal rows of pits are carried over from the silver wall to the copper alloy cap of the thimble which - now - is other…

Silver thimble. Pressed metal conical thimble. A foot ring has a narrow plain zone above it, with a series of ogival panels above that, each containing a vegetal spray. The upper half of the wall is occupied by finely machine stamped pits which appear as if arranged in diagonal rows. These are interrupted only by a small heater-shield-shaped panel midway up. They continue to the side of a rim around a plain flat top. Lightly squashed. The mass of precious metal used might suggest this thimble was made with respect to the continental metric standard promulgated under Napoleon from c.18…

Silver thimble. Conical domed thimble. The lower half of the wall is occupied by four plain grooves between finely billeted bands standing proud. The upper part bears a machine stamped pattern of closely spaced circular pits. These give out at the top which is now smooth, probably as an original feature, and now lightly dented. The finder kindly cites UKDFD no. 46096 in suggesting a post-medieval date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1775-1825. Diameter: 13.6mm, Height: 19.5mm, Thickness (wall): 0.3mm, Weight: 1.93gms.

Silver thimble. Beaten sheet metal domed thimble, probably made on a former and machined. The lower half of the wall is plain, framed by paired sets of circumferential grooves above and below, which are each followed by three bands of probably rouletted closely spaced vertical slashes. The upper half of the wall bears close-spaced rectangular or rhomboid pits ascending in diagonal lines for fourteen circumferential rows. The top is plain save for turning lines indicating finishing on a lathe. Spots of rusty staining on the wall and top are presumably from an adjacent object, as there …

The domed top bears about six concentric rings of smaller pits. Lightly squashed. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1875. Silver thimble fragment. Probably machined thimble with a foot ring with a plain zone above and closely spaced oval pits in diagonal lines ascending leftwards, probably occupying two thirds of the wall. A set of worn hallmarks in the plain zone includes an anchor denoting the Birmingham assay office but the year stamp is illegible. The top of the thimble is lost and its upper walls are raggedly torn and perforated in one place. Now squashed. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1850-1900. Width: 23.0mm, Height: 20.7mm, Thickness (wall): 0.4mm, Weight: 2.46gms.

Silver thimble. Sheet metal domed thimble beaten over a former. The lower wall bore a ground of closely spaced diagonal ridges, with a circumferential groove half way up the wall. Over this were soldered leaves and flowers, in an originally continuous band. The upper wall is occupied by fine machine stamped pits, which continue on a spiral arrangement on the domed top. Now crumpled. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1825-1875. Height: 22.6mm, Diameter (estimated): 18mm, Thickness (wall, clear of additional decoration): 0.6mm, Weight: 3.41gms.

Silver and copper alloy thimble. Sheet metal thimble, probably made by hammering over a former, of conical form with a copper alloy top soldered onto the top. Decoration of the lower half of the wall comprises a series of leaves framed by and springing from tendrils of zig zag rockered work, all within paired band borders of finely punched or rouletted dots. The veins of the leaves are rendered by hand-punched slashes, with supplementary shading of finely spaced diagonal lines of smaller dots. The series is interrupted by a framed initial letter hand-inscribed in flowing calligraphic …

Silver thimble. Cast open topped thimble or sewing ring with a broad plain foot ring, a plain zone above divided by a circumferential ridge, and about 13 rows of closely spaced punched indentations. It is uncertain whether this was made as an open thimble or whether it was domed and has lost its top. Now squashed flat, damage which may have detached a top part if one was originally present. Suggested date: Modern, 1800-1900. Height: 20.7mm, Width: 23.5mm, Thickness (foot ring): 1.1mm, Weight (with some trapped soil): 3.60gms
