Silver pin. A small and tapered round-section shank with a sub-spherical collared head. The top of the head is now flat, probably due to its having been hammered. The simple form would be apt to upholstery work and is known from the Roman period onwards, though the use of silver suggests decorative intent. A collar might be expected on pins [though intended for other purposes] from the Middle Saxon period. However, a later date cannot be ruled out. The use of silver upholstery pins would be unusual in recent times, which may suggest that the object should be submitted to the Treasure p…

Silver pin head. A collared triple loop of drawn wire of diameter 1.5mm with a small spherical terminal with a hole of diameter 1.3mm to receive a separate shank [lost]. The loops form two addorsed heart-shaped figures. A maker's mark appears alongside hallmarks stamped at the top of the loops; from left to right these are: G.H.; a lion walking left in a rectangular panel, three or four tiny figures in a shield-shaped panel, and the italic letter [possibly] E. If the figures in the middle part of the hallmark are three castles this would indicate the Newcastle assay office, or if othe…

Silver pin fragment. Cast round section elongated head from a pin; the stub of the shank, which is entirely lost at a clean break, suggests it was of 1.3mm diameter. An elongated terminal knop is divided from the rest of the object by a collar with finely incised cross hatch. Similar ornament, now mostly lost to wear, may have adorned a second collar immediately before the shank. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600. In view of its age and material, the object is to be submitted to the Treasure process, ref. 2017 T182. Length: 22.9mm, Diameter: 3.5mm, Weight: 1.84gms.

Description: Sub-rectangular or D-shaped head of a gilded silver pin. At one end the edge is more rectilinear, with a circular scar c. 2mm in diameter, where the shaft has been lost. The pin head has opposed flat faces, a flat undecorated front and a curved back. The flat main faces have similar decoration. Three curving V-section grooves spring from the middle of the end nearest the scar, curving and separating slightly towards the lower corner of the other end. The effect is that of a bird's beak, and this is heightened by a small dot set close to the springing point of the grooves,…

Silver-gilt pin. A composite head comprising a rhomboid back plate of thickness 0.7mm with fringed edges and the remnants of a hollow sheet metal boss attached to it. Projecting parts of the back plate are crudely scored at its pointed ends. A drawn wire shank of diameter 1.4mm is flattened at its upper end, and is here soldered to the back plate; its tip is probably lost, as is the upper part of its flattened end.

Silver and copper alloy possible pin fragment. Cast elongated shield-shaped concavo-convex plate with engrailed top edge, with the shank of a drawn wire pin attached by a blob of solder on the back. A decorative motif comprises foliage of trilobate leaves against a finely hatched ground, all incised detail executed by hand, within a plain border. The plate concealed the pin. Judy Rudoe of the British Museum kindly corrects an initial identification of the object by this reporter as being a pin of Post-Medieval date (1650-1800). Rather, it is a Victorian tie or cravat pin bearing an iv…

Silver pin of middle Anglo-Saxon date (8th century). The head is flat, tapering in thickness to a minimum of 1.5mm, and is complete but irregular in shape with added engraved decoration, identical on both faces. It appears to depict a stylised animal's head in profile. A mouth is formed from a concave edge with a groove running alongside to delineate the lower jaw, and there is a small projecting nose above forming one of the pinhead's upper corners. A wide shallow groove runs down from the top of the pinhead, almost vertical but angled slightly towards the mouth, and hints at a brow …
